One day a very skilled artist met a beautiful woman who immediately became the object of his affections. As he observed her and spoke with her, he admired her more and more. He showered her with kindness and words of praise until she consented to be his wife.

Not long after they were married, however, the beautiful woman found out that she was more the object of his artistic interest than of his affections. When he admired her classic beauty, it was as though he were standing in front of a work of art rather than in front of a human being to whom he had pledged his love and promised his life. And soon he expressed his great desire to put her rare beauty on canvas.

“Please sit for me in the workroom,” he pleaded, “and I will make your beauty permanent. The work will be my masterpiece!”

She was humble and patient as well as flattered by his words, so she said, “Yes, my love. I will be happy to sit for you.” So the beautiful, young wife of the artist sat meekly for hours in his studio, not complaining. Day after day she sat patiently, smiling as she posed, because she loved him and because she hoped

that he would see her love in her smile and obedience. She sometimes wanted to call out to him, “Please love me and want me as a person rather than as an object!” But instead, she spoke nothing but words which pleased him.

At length, as the labor drew to close, the painter became wilder in his passion for his work. He only rarely turned his eyes from the canvas to look at his wife. As he stood there gazing at his beautiful work of art, he cried with a loud voice, “This is indeed life itself!” Then he turned to his beloved and saw that she was dead!

A. The artist loved his work more than his wife. B. The artist didn't really understand what is beauty.

C. The wife was fooled to sacrifice for his art creation. D. The wife loved his painting more than herself.

(3)What did the artist mean by saying “This is indeed life itself!”?

A. He appreciated his life of painting. B. He was grateful to his wife.

C. His work was more true to life than life itself. D. His effort was really worth it.

(4)What would be the best title for this passage?

A. A Well-matched Couple B. A Devoted Artist

C. A Rare Masterpiece D. A Stupid Wife

【答案】(1)A

Imagine your clothing could release enough heat to keep you warm and cozy, allowing you to stay comfortable in a cooler room. Or, picture a car windshield that stores the sun's energy and then releases it as heat to make the ice on the windshield disappear.

According to a team of researchers at MIT, both cases may be possible before long, thanks to a new material that can store solar energy during the day and release it later as heat. This transparent polymer film could be applied to many different surfaces, such as window glass or clothing.

Solar energy is only available about half the time we need it — during daylight. For the sun to become a major power provider for human needs, there has to be an efficient way to save it up for use during nighttime and stormy days. Most such efforts have focused on storing and recovering solar energy in the form of electricity, but the new finding, by MlI professor Jeffrey Grossman, Postdoc David Zhitomirsky and graduate student Eugene Cho, could provide a highly efficient method for storing the sun's energy through a chemical reaction and releasing it later as heat.

The key to enabling long-term, stable storage of solar heat, the team said, is to store it in the form of a chemical change rather than storing the heat itself. But heat will disappear over time no matter how good the material around it is, so the team set up a chemical storage system that can keep the energy in a stable molecular configuration. When exposed to sunlight, the molecules can stay that way for long periods Then, when triggered (触发)by a very specific temperature or

something else, the molecules return to their original shape , giving off heat in the process.

Such chemically-based storage materials, known as Solar Thermal Fuels(STF), have been developed before. But those earlier efforts were designed to be used in liquid solutions and not able to make durable (耐用的) solid-state films. The new approach is the first based on a solid-state material, in this case a polymer, and the first based on inexpensive materials and widespread production technology.

(1)What is the main purpose of Paragraph 1?

A.To show the main idea of the passage.

B.To practice readers' imagination.

C.To interest readers in the passage.

D.To introduce a new kind of material.

(2)According to the passage, what can the polymer film do?

A.It can be made into window glass.

B.It can make necessary electricity.

C.It can store energy and release sunshine.

D.It can absorb sunshine and give off heat.

(3)According to the passage, what is STF based on?

A.The chemical reaction.

B.The movement of heat.

C.The form of electricity.

D.The physical reaction.

(4)What is the advantage of the molecular configuration?

A.It is less expensive.

B.It is very powerful.

C.It is easily available.

D.It is less changeable.

【答案】 (1)C

(2)D

(3)A

(4)D

根据第一段“Imagine your clothing could release enough heat to keep you warm and cozy, allowing you to stay comfortable in a cooler room. Or, picture a car windshield that stores the sun's energy and then releases it as heat to make the ice on the windshield disappear.

根据第二段中的“thanks to a new material that can store solar energy during the day and release it later as heat. This transparent polymer film could be applied to many different surfaces, such as window glass or clothing. ”多亏了这种能在白天吸热之后以热能形式释放的新型材料,这个透明的聚合物膜可以应用于许多不同的表面,如窗户玻璃或服装)可知,这种聚合物膜可以吸热,此后再以热能的形式释放出来。故选D。

(3)考查细节理解。根据最后一段中的“Such chemically-based storage materials, known as Solar Thermal Fuels(STF), have been developed before. ”这种以化学反应为基础的储存材料,即太阳能热燃料(STF),以前就已经被开发出来了,可知,STF是以化学反应为基础。故选A。

根据第四段中的“But heat will disappear over time no matter how good the material around it is, so the team set up a chemical storage system that can keep the energy in a stable molecular configuration. ”但是热量会随着时间的推移而消失,不管周围的物质有多好,所以研究小组建立了一个化学储存系统,可以将能量保持在一个稳定的分子结构中)可推断,这种分子结构的优势是相对稳定。故选D。

【点评】本题考点涉及细节理解和推理判断两个题型的考查,是一篇科普类阅读,考生需要准确捕捉细节信息,并根据上下文进行逻辑推理,从而选出正确答案。

3.Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.

\"The history of the world is but the biography (传记) of great men,\" argued Thomas Carlyle, the advocate of what has come to be known as the \"Great Man Theory of History.\" This theory suggests that the broader movements and outline of history all go back to the leadership of great individuals who had unique influence on their times. Whether or not Carlyle's theory proves true is debatable, but that certain individuals cast long shadows is not.

As one who is entrusted with a leadership position, I find it profitable to read of others who have led. Wherever you find me, you'll likely find a good biography nearby. Why is this the case? First, I find good biographies fascinating. I'll occasionally read a novel, but I've never been overly drawn to fiction. I have found myself unable to sleep while in the struggle of the Battle of Britain in William Manchester's The Last Lion. For me, not to read biographies would rob me of pleasure in my life.

Second, I find good biographies informative. A good biographer tells not only the story of a person, but also of their times. Reading a good biography is like wandering through an intellectual shopping mall. The first store is what drew you there, but you will be pleasantly surprised along the way at what other items grab your attention. You'll find no better account of the British Empire at its peak than the opening chapters of Manchester's Visions of Glory, volume one of his

The Last Lion. Strictly speaking, a biography is but a slice of history.

Third, I find good biographies relaxing. Winston Churchill once noted a man who works with his hands should have a hobby that engages his mind, and a man who works with his mind should have a hobby that engages his hands. Another way to apply Churchill's saying is to combine technical, pen-in-hand vocational reading with leisurely biographical reading. Indeed, few things are more relaxing to me than winding down the evening and entering into another world.

This is why I love reading good biographies, and why I pity the person who neglects them. Don't be counted among their number.

(1)What is implied in the first paragraph?

A. The author finds Carlyle's theory undebatable.

B. Carlyle believes great men alone cannot create history.

C. It is debatable whether one should read great men's biographies.

D. The author agrees that history is greatly influenced by certain men.

(2)What does the underlined phrase \"other items\" in the third paragraph refer to?

A. good biographies B. stories of certain times

C. the volumes of The Last Lion D. the chapters of the British Empire

(3)Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. The author considers biographical reading enjoyable.

B. The author can travel to another world in the evening.

C. The author has fought many battles during his lifetime.

D. The author profits commercially by reading biographies.

(4)What is the author's main purpose in writing the article?

A. To analyze the benefits of vocational reading.

B. To introduce to readers his unique reading strategies.

C. To present great men's history through biography reading.

D. To recommend biography reading through his own experiences.

【答案】 (1)D

(2)B

(3)A

(4)D

根据第一段中的\"This theory suggests that the broader movements and outline of history all go back to the leadership of great individuals who had unique influence on their times\"可知,这一理论表明,更广泛的历史运动和轮廓都可以追溯到对其时代有独特影响的伟大人物的领导。

的关键词\"go back to,had unique influence on their times\",判断出第一段暗示了作者同意历史受某些人的影响很大。

根据第三段中的\"A good biographer tells not only the story of a person, but also of their times. Reading a good biography is like wandering through an intellectual shopping mall. The first store is what drew you there, but you will be pleasantly surprised along the way at what other items grab your attention. \"可知,一个好的传记作家不仅讲述一个人的故事,而且还在讲述他们所处的时代。读一本好的传记就像漫步在一个充满智慧的购物中心。第一家商店吸引了你,但你会惊喜地发现,还有其它的商品吸引了你的注意力。所以作者把读好的传记比喻成购物,将历史人物和某个时期的历史故事比喻成商店的商品。故判断出第三段划线的\"other items\"指的是某个时期的故事。故选B。

(3)考查细节理解。根据第二段中的\"For me, not to read biographies would rob me of pleasure in my life\"以及第三段\" Indeed, few things are more relaxing to me than winding down the evening and entering into another world.\"可知,对我来说,不读传记会剥夺我生活的乐趣。 故选A。

根据第二段中的\"First, I find good biographies fascinating.\";第三段中的\"Second, I find good biographies informative.\";第四段中的\"Third, I find good biographies relaxing.\" 以及最后段\"This is why I love reading good biographies, and why I pity the person who neglects them. Don't be counted among their number.\"可知,首先,我觉得好的传记很吸引人。

Many people have long dreamed of being able to fly around as simply as riding a bicycle. Yet the safety and strength of a flying bike was always a big problem. Over the past 10 years, developments in technology have moved the dream of personal flying vehicles closer to reality. Now, two groups of inventors

say such vehicles may be available soon.

The British company Malloy Aeronautics has developed a prototype (原型) of its flying bicycle. Grant Stapleton, marketing sales director of Malloy Aeronautics, says the Hoverbike is able to get in and out of small spaces very quickly.\" It can be moved across continents very quickly because it can be folded and packed,\" he adds.

Mr. Stapleton says safety was the company's main concern. He says the designers solved the safety issue by using overlapping rotors to power the vehicle.

The company is testing a full-size prototype of the Hoverbike, which will most likely be used first by the police and emergency rescue teams.

In New Zealand, Martin Aircraft Company is also testing a full-size prototype of its personal flying device, called the Jetpack. It can fly for more than 30 minutes, up to 1, 000meters high and reach a speed of 74 kilometers per hour.

Peter Coker is the CEO of Martin Aircraft Company. He said the Jetpack \"is built around safety from the start\". In his words, “Reliability is the most important element of it. We have safety built into the actual structure itself, very similar to a Formula One racing car.

The Jetpack uses a gasoline-powered engine that produces two powerful jet

streams. Mr. Coker says it also has a parachute that would be used, if there should be an emergency. \"It starts to work at very low altitude and actually saves both the aircraft and the pilot,\" he adds. Mr. Coker says the Jetpack will be ready for sale soon.

(1)We can learn from the passage that the Hoverbike .

A. can hardly get in and out of small spaces quickly B. can fly for over 30 minutes, up to l, 000 meters high

As kids, my friends and I spent a lot of time out in the woods. \"The woods\" was our part-time address, destination, purpose, and excuse. If I went to a friend's house and found him not at home, his mother might say, \"Oh, he's out in the woods,\" with a tone (语气) of airy acceptance. It's similar to the tone people

sometimes use now a days to tell me that someone I'm looking for is on the golf course or at the gym, or even \"away from his desk\". For us ten-year-olds, \"being out in the woods\" was just an excuse to do whatever we feel like for a while.

We sometimes told ourselves that what we were doing in the woods was exploring (探索). Exploring was a more popular idea back then than it is today. History seemed to be mostly about explorers. Our explorations, though seemed to have less system than the historic kind something usually came up along the way. Say we stayed in the woods, throwing rocks, shooting frogs, picking blackberries, digging in what we were briefly persuaded was an Indian burial mound.

Often we got \"lost\" and had to climb a tree to find out where we were. If you read a story in which someone does that successfully, be skeptical; the topmost branches are usually too skinny to hold weight, and we could never climb high enough to see anything except other trees. There were four or five trees that we visited regularly-tall beeches easy to climb and comfortable to sit in.

It was in a tree, too, that our days of fooling around in the woods came to an end. By then some of us has reached seventh grade and had begun the rough ride of adolescence (青春期). In March, the month when we usually took to the woods again after winter, two friends and I set out to go exploring. We climbed a tree, and all of a sudden it occurred to all three of us at the same time that we really were rather big to be up in a tree. Soon there would be the spring dances on Friday evenings in the high school cafeteria.

(1)The author and his friends were often out in the woods to .

A. spend their free time B. play golf and other sports

C. avoid doing their schoolwork D. keep away from their parents

(2)What can we infer from Paragraph 2?

A. The activities in the woods were well planned. B. Human history is not the result of exploration.

C. Exploration should be a systematic activity. D. The author explored in the woods aimlessly

(3)The underlined word \"skeptical\" in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to .

A. calm B. doubtful C. serious D. optimistic

(4)The reason why we visited the four or five trees regularly is the following except that .

A. they were tall beeches B. they were easy to climb

C. they were not hi to climb D. they were comfortable to sit in

(5)How does the author feel about his childhood?

A. Happy but short. B. Lonely but memorable.

C. Boring and meaningless. D. Long and unforgettable.

【答案】(1)A

(2)D

根据第一段中的“For us ten-year-olds, “being out in the woods” was just an excuse to do whatever we feel like for a while.” 故选A。

根据第二段中的“Our explorations, though seemed to have less system than the historic kind something usually came up along the way. ”可知,但是我们的探索与历史上的相比不够系统,有些东西通常都是在沿途中偶然出现的,因此推断作者探索是无目的的。故选D。

(3)考查词义猜测。根据第三段中的“the topmost branches are usually too skinny to hold weight, and we could never climb high enough to see anything except other trees.”

根据第三段中的“There were four or five trees that we visited regularly-tall beeches easy to climb and comfortable to sit in.”

根据第一段中的“ For us ten-year-olds, ‘being out in the woods” was just an excuse to do whatever we feel like for a while.’”可知,作者和小伙伴们在“树林”里很快乐;以及最后一段中的“We climbed a tree, and all of a sudden it occurred to all three of us at the same time that we really were rather big to be up in a tree. Soon there would be the spring dances on Friday evenings in the high school cafeteria.” 故选A。

A 12-year-old with end stage cancer, the child's parents had recently moved her from the hospital to her home in the suburbs of Los Angeles. Some days later the girl's breath quickened, and her father phoned the family's hospice nurse. Please come, he said.

The nurse knew the visit would require more than four hours of her time: a two-hour drive in each direction, plus her time with the girl. Why don't we connect over FaceTime, she asked. The father agreed, and they connected.

The nurse asked the father to move his daughter gently to her side, then to her back, to lift the child's shirt. The nurse would ask: What do you see, what concerns you, and the father would explain. In this fashion the pair examined the girl --- the nurse on her computer, the father his iPad. Together they decided that the nurse's presence was not necessary, that the child had more time.

Later, the father reported feeling comforted by the nurse. He appreciated her availability, the fact that she could see what he saw, and their ability to discuss it in real time.

Telemedicine has become a trend in America. Some hospitals have gone so

far as to specially design telemedicine clinics. The room is staged like an office but with better lighting. There's a nice desk for the clinician to sit behind, a computer situated stage left, and books in the background. A physician taking a video call from home might wear a pair of headphones, equipped with a mic --- to ensure whatever the patient says isn't broadcast to anyone off-camera.

However, there is something more than the technology bit. According to David, the head of the telemedicine pilot the girl's family had been part of, there are some people who are great in person and you put them on camera they're a dead fish. “Some physicians are camera shy. For others, the physical isolation can actually help them be more empathetic.” He adds.

“My experience is that, once you get past some initial hurdles, you can maintain an intimate, immediate connection with patients that in some cases may be more useful than even in-person interactions,” David says.

(1)Why did the nurse suggesting connecting via FaceTime?

A. Because she was not allowed to leave her clinic. B. Because she had to take care of other patients in the clinic.

C. Because it took too much time on her way to patient's

home. D. Because the father didn't pay for her fare of transportation.

(2)How did the father think of the telemedicine service?

A. He doubted the quality of the service. B. He thought highly of the service.

C. He insisted the service be improved. D. He challenged the authority of the nurse.

(3)What do we know about the rooms for telemedicine?

A. Better air conditioners are provided for a comfortable

environment. B. Mics are equipped to protect privacy of patients.

C. Professional books are in place for immediate consultation. D. The room with a computer is situated in the doctor's home.

(4)What challenges may clinicians face in telemedicine?

A. They are afraid of being isolated from patients. B. They could not examine the patients carefully.

C. They are required to deal with in-person interactions. D. They may not feel quite themselves in front of a camera.

The next generation of artificial intelligence (AI) may be sitting right beneath you, at least if furniture maker Ikea has any say in the matter. The Swedish furniture company's “future-living” research lab in Copenhagen is conducting a survey to understand what people want when it comes to smart furniture.

AI is now walking into more aspects of people's daily lives. Self-driving cars are just around the corner, and AI robots can play and beat the best players of strategy games. As smart home technologies have become more ubiquitous, products ranging from smart electrical outlets(插座)to smart smoke alarms are flooding the market. Therefore, it's not surprising that Ikea would be moving in the same direction.

Exactly why people would want their sofa or bed frame to speak to then, track their daily movements or offer help is not yet clear. Though Ikea's the new survey doesn't directly answer that question, it does provide a hint of what people would feel comfortable with. Most participants wanted a more human0like form of virtual(虚拟的)assistants, as opposed to one that is more robotic. In terms of the ideal gender(性别)of the assistants, the most popular

choice was neither male nor female. Few wanted a religious form of AI.

Just as with human friends, most wanted AI friends that were like them, affirming their own worldview. They wanted an AI assistant that was reasonably intelligent-that could collect data to predict what a person wanted before he or she asked, and that could prevent someone from making mistakes.

This is not the first time that Ikea has set foot in the field or futuristic technologies. In addition to wireless charging tables and chainless bikes that never rust(生锈), the furniture giant has also pictured smart kitchens that can cook the best meal. To decide on how intelligent you want your next sofa or bookshelf to be, you can take Ikea's survey online.

(1)What does the underlined word \"ubiquitous\" in Paragraph 2 mean?

A. Beautiful. B. Common. C. Normal. D. Environment.

(2)What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?

A. The differences between robot-like and human-like

assistants. B. What form of AI assistants people want.

C. What kind of friends people want. D. The popular robots on the market.

(3)Most people who received the survey wanted an AI assistant that could ________.

A. help them became smarter B. communicate with them without troubles

C. have its own worldview D. deal with their problems in advance

(4)Which of the following products are from Ikea?

Mrs. Jones was my first patient when I started medical school—and I owe her a lot.

She was under my care for the first two years of my medical training, yet I knew very little about her, except that she was thin, perhaps in her mid 70s. It might seem rather negligent not to know the basic facts of my patient ,but I had a valid reason—Mrs. Jones was dead, and had been dead for about three years before I made a patient of her. Mrs. Jones was the dead body that I dissected(解剖)over the first two years of my medical training.

Of course, her name wasn't really Mrs. Jones, but it seemed a little impolite to be conducting research into someone's body without even knowing its name, so out of courtesy, I thought she should have one. “Me and Mrs. Jones, we've got a thing going on,” went the song coming out of the radio as I unzipped the bag of her on my first day — and so she was christened.

As the months passed, I soon forgot that Mrs. Jones had, in fact, once been alive. One day, though, she suddenly became very human again. I'd been dissecting Mrs. Jones a good 18 months before I got around to the uterus(子宫). After I'd removed it, the professor came up to me, “If you look at the opening carefully, you'll see that the angle indicates that this woman has had several children, probably three.” I stared at it, and I suddenly felt very strange. This woman, who had given me something incredibly precious that I'd begun to take for granted, wasn't a dead body. She was a person, a mother, in fact.

At my graduation, the same professor came over to congratulate me. I explained the story about Mrs. Jones to him, and recalled what he'd told me about her having children and how that had affected me all those years ago.

“Well,” he said, “at the beginning of your training you had a dead body and managed to turn it into a person. Now you're a doctor, the trick is to have a person and not turn them into a dead body,” and he laughed, shook my hand and walked away.

(1)Why didn't the author know much about Mrs. Jones?

A. Because he was irresponsible for his patients.

B. Because he wasn't allowed to ask for her privacy.

C. Because he didn't know her until she passed away.

D. Because he was too careless while dissecting her.

(2)How did Mrs. Jones get her name?

A. It was passed down from the seniors of my school.

B. It came from a song being played when we first met.

C. She was named after a well-known singer I liked best

D. It just occurred to me when I opened the bag of her.

(3)What could be the author's feeling for Mrs. Jones now?

A. Grateful. B. Pitiless. C. Hateful. D. Guilty.

(4)What did the professor imply by his words in the last paragraph?

A. Medical students are able to bring the dead back to life.

B. Being a doctor has nothing to do with the medical training.

C. Good doctors never fail to save their patients from dying.

D. Medical staff ought to have respect for life and humanity.

To fight for the conservation of forest ecosystem, several ecologists including Daniel Janzen convinced Del Oro, an orange juice producer, to donate part of their forestland to a national park. In return, Del Oro was allowed to throw large amounts of waste in the form of orange peels (皮) on a 3-hectare piece of land within the national park at no cost. Dealing with tons of leftover peels usually involved burning them or paying to have them poured into a landfill, so the proposal was very attractive.

But a year later, another juice company challenged the deal in court, arguing that their competitor was “polluting a national park”. They ended up winning, and the deal between Del Oro and the national park fell through.

Then in 2013, while discussing possible research avenues with Timothy Treuer, Daniel Janzen mentioned the orange story. Feeling interested, Treuer decided to stop by that piece of land that had been covered with fruit waste 15 years earlier. What he found shocked him.

“While I would walk over exposed rock and dead grass in the nearby fields, I'd have to climb through undergrowth and cut paths through walls of vines (藤) in the orange peel site itself.” said Timothy Treuer.

Treuer and his team spent months picking up samples (样品), analyzing and comparing them. They found great differences between the areas covered with orange peels and those that were not. The area with orange waste had richer soil.

The effect that the orange peels had on the land is probably not that surprising to people familiar with composting (施肥), but what is really shocking is that a judge actually thought the waste of orange “mined” a national park and stopped it from going forward. Now that Timothy Treuer's study has received worldwide attention, this type of “ruining” is being seriously considered as a way of bringing forests back to life.

(1)What did Del Oro usually do with orange peels?

A. Add them to fuel. B. Throw them into a national park.

C. Bum or bury them. D. Make them into cakes.

(2)What can we know about the deal between Del Oro and the national park?

A. It lasted 15 years. B. It was signed by Treuer.

C. It was made in about 1998. D. It was broken by Del Oro.

(3)What was Treuer's finding?

A. Orange peels contain much fibre. B. Orange peels can make soil richer.

C. Orange peels rot away in a short time. D. Orange waste ruined the national park.

(4)What is the author's attitude toward the judge mentioned in the last paragraph?

A. Disapproving. B. Positive. C. Worried. D. Admirable.

Years ago, students applying to colleges and universities had to have their applications and personal essays printed out and then “snail-mailed”. Flash forward to today's world of Facebook, Instagram and WeChat, where photos, videos and mobile phones rule. Fortunately, several new tools are making it easier for college applicants to use technology to show off their personalities, skills and creativity.

ZEEMEE

One of the more popular innovations in college applications is ZeeMee, a free mobile app that allows students to upload personal profiles and videos to create visual resumes. More than 220 colleges and universities offer a ZeeMee option as part of the application process. The video can show the unique creative aspects of the applicants.

THE COALITION LOCKER

Another relatively new tool comes from the Coalition for Access, Affordability

and Success, now used by more than 110 member colleges and universities. Among the group's stated goals are getting students engaged in college prep early and using technology to create a supportive application process that encourages reflection and self-discovery.

Students who sign up for the free platform get access to a digital “locker”, which they can use all through high school to save class papers, artwork, newspaper stories, videos and photos to share with colleges when they eventually apply.

VIDEO — CHAT INTERVIEWS

At some schools, an interview with an admission officer is an important part of the application process. To make it easier, several virtual interviewing tools have popped up, such as a video-based platform from Kira. More than 140 universities worldwide use Kira's video assessment tool to conduct real-time interviews with prospective students. During the interview, candidates are shown the questions prerecorded by the particular school and must respond in real time by talking into the camera on their laptop or phone. In addition to showing their ability, to speak fluently in English and think on their feet, it helps admission officers determine the “motivation, commitment and drive” of applicants.

UNIQUE SCHOOL TOOLS

Some universities have come up with their own ways to allow students to

show their skills and personalities. For example, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, encourages applicants to display their technical abilities and creativity by submitting a “Maker Portfolio” —a written or videotaped description of a project that shows creative and problem-solving skills. While a new app would fit the bill, the project could be anything from an origami design to a potato cannon.

(1)Which of the apps give students more guidance from their high school?

A. ZEEMEE. B. THE COALITION LOCKER.

C. VIDEO — CHAT INTERVIEWS. D. UNIQUE SCHOOL TOOLS.

(2)What does the underlined word “it” in the fourth part of the passage refer to?

A. The video interview. B. The description. C. The application. D. The student's ability.

(3)What is the common feature required by colleges and universities according to the passage?

A. Creativity. B. Braveness. C. Willingness to

share. D. Technical ability.

Valentine's Day is supposed to be about love and romance. But unfortunately, it can be just the opposite. Because of that, Feb. 15th starts the busy season for divorce lawyers, as people who were unhappy with their marriages heading into the day often decide that they no longer want to be with the one they used to love.

A study of divorce filings (档案) in New York, Illinois and California by AttorneyFee. com, a legal referral (推荐) site, found that February is the busiest month of the year for divorce filings, up about 18% from the average month. And those seeking referrals for a divorce lawyer on the site increase 38% following the holiday, with the biggest rise on the day after Valentine's.

Another legal site, Avvo. com, reports a 40% increase in those seeking information and advice about divorce in the period right after Valentine's Day.

\"There's a very large number of people who are considering the divorce all the time, deciding whether or not to file,\" said Richard Komaiko, a co-founder of

AttorneyFee. \"On Valentine's Day, this thing is carefully considered.\"

Komaiko said February has factors other than the holiday that could lead to an increase in divorces. January is the busiest month of the year for bankruptcy (破产) filings, highlighting the financial problems that often divide couples. In addition, the cold weather of February can keep couples that are having trouble indoors and closer to each other, adding to problems.

But Alton Abramowitz, president of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, believes the holiday itself often worsen the relationship for couples who are having trouble. \"There's always the clients who come in a day or two after saying 'I can't believe it. I made this beautiful dinner for my husband for Valentine's Day, but he called to say he was stuck in the office and then didn't come home at all.'\" Abramowitz said, \"the day can create problems that lead to them finally getting caught.\"

(1)What makes Valentine's Day convey the meaning opposite to love and romance?

A. Valentine's Day won't bring people love and romance.

B. Many divorce filings change the nature of Valentine's Day.

C. Couples having troubles tend to break up after Valentine's Day.

D. Divorce lawyers dislike the atmosphere of Valentine's Day.

(2)According to the study made by AttorneyFee. com, divorce filings are ________.

A. occurring most after the new year B. less connected with Valentine's Day

C. more likely to be handled online D. at the height of popularity in February

(3)People intending to divorce may make use of Valentine's Day to ________.

A.reflect on the divorce

B.take legal action

C.make negotiations

D.put the divorce aside

(4)According to Komaiko why do divorces grow in number in February?

A.Because financial problems and cold weather may bring more problems.

B.Because the long winter holiday makes couples hard to get through.

C.Because the husband is too busy with work to spend the day with his wife.

D.Because Valentine's Day gets couples into financial trouble.

They have beaten us at chess, and now computers are taking a step into a very human territory: the reading comprehension test, which schoolchildren everywhere are suffering.

Alibaba said its artificial research outperformed mere mortals (凡人) in a global reading test that seeks answers to such pressing questions as \"what was Nikola Tesla's ethnicity?\" and \"how big is the Amazon rainforest?\"

Luo Si referred to the machines' victory as \"a milestone\". He said the technology has many uses, from customer service to museum tutorials to medical enquires-some of which are already being handled by chatbots (聊天机器人) globally.

In the test, companies subjected their artificial intelligence systems to queries from the Stanford Question Answering Dataset, which assessed reading comprehension. The computers' answers were compared against average human responses and ranked.

Tying in top place were Microsoft, the US software giant, and Alibaba, the Chinese tech group that began with ecommerce and--like its peers at home and abroad---is ploughing more funds into AI, much of it via its research arm.

While Microsoft and Alibaba won by the slimmest of margins---at accuracy levels a few basis points above humans' 82.3 per cent in providing exact matches to questions--the tie provided a fitting symbol of the AI arms race between the US and China.

China aims to use its vast troves (宝库)of data, collected from its 1.4 billion population including 730 million who are online, and deep pockets to overtake

the US in creating a $150 billion industry that is seen as the next industrial revolution. AI is already being harnessed in everything from driverless cars to customising newsfeeds.

While China's drive is being spearheaded by government, it is cultivating homegrown tech giants including Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent to leap ahead of the US.

Baidu made an early bet on AI, and is leading its rivals in autonomous driving. Tencent, which boasts just shy of 1 billion monthly active users on its social media WeChat app, and Alibaba have adopted AI in operations such as customizing news and ads, and are investing in new fields.

(1)What does Luo Si think of Al's performance in reading comprehension?

A.He feels frightened at it.

B.He has some doubts about it.

C.He thinks highly of it.

D.He considers it worth a try.

(2)How did the reading test carry on for Al?

A.By allowing them to interact with humans.

B.By asking them to answer questions.

C.By giving them questions to analyze.

D.By making them compete with chatbots.

(3)What does China depend on to lead in Al?

A.The new industrial revolution.

B.The huge market of $150 billion industry investment.

C.Massive data from its 1.4 billion population and huge amounts of treasure.

D.The cooperation between Chinese government and Microsoft.

(4)In which field does Baidu do better than its rivals?

A.The medical enquires.

B.The customer service.

C.Customer news feeds.

D.The driverless cars.

\"Tomorrow is another day\" — this line has impressed various people at various times. It's now 70 years after it appeared in the film, but it still seems to hold its power especially during an economic downturn.

The phrase comes from a film adaptation of Margaret Mitchell's successful 1936 novel Gone With the Wind. It's set in the American South and tells the story of a strong heroine, Scarlett O' Hara, who struggles to find love during the Civil War and, afterwards, of her strength in surviving the war and its hardships.

Love story

In a moment of despair, Scarlett finally realizes that her love belongs to Rhett Butler. For many audiences, it is the theme of love and struggle that has kept the movie alive. While the burning of Atlanta might seem irrelevant (不相关的) to today's viewers, the timeless theme of love keeps its ability to touch people.

With a promise to her lover still in her mind, Scarlett chooses to stay in the midst of war and take care of Melanie. But her heart is broken when Rhett just walks away, leaving the woman that he once loved with cruel words, \"Frankly, dear, I don't give a damn.\" (毫不在乎)

Great epic (史诗)

The film shows the love-hate relationship of these characters, but also American history, the fall of the Confederacy and the following period of Reconstruction in the South. The background made this film a true classic in the epic genre.

When the film opened after World War II, French viewers loved it, and it reminded them of their fight against the Nazis. In 1940 Shanghai, during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (侵略), people stood in line for hours to watch this film, and saw the same suffering they were having as well as the hope and possibility of building a new homeland from the ruins. Each nationality could identify with the story and see it as a victory. In fact, Gone With the Wind

never lost its charm and ability to inspire and amaze.

Biggest of all time

The film had five directors, 15-plus screenwriters, and an unexpected $3.9 million budget. The film brought in $200 million, which makes it the biggest selling film of all times in North America. It also won 10 Academy awards in 1940.

(1)The underlined word \"it\" in the first paragraph refers to ______.

A. celebrate the anniversary of Margaret Mitchell B. introduce how the film was directed and filmed

C. throw light on (阐述) the charm of the movie \"Gone with the Wind\" D. inspire people to struggle the economic downturn

(3)It can be concluded that Scarlett O' Hara is ______.

A. optimistic and lucky B. childish and realistic

C. caring and stubborn persistent (坚毅的)

D. strong-minded and

(4)The passage mentions Shanghai in order to ______.

C. point out that Shanghai was a center of entertainment D. tell us that Chinese were suffering the War then

【答案】(1)B

When my sister Mertie told me she had put out tomato plants last summer, I was quite impressed.

Since she was a garden-beginner, Mertie researched exactly how far apart to space her tomato plants; what kind of fertilizer to use; how to keep away the bugs, etc. Once they were planted, she took care of them daily, anxiously awaiting the juicy tomatoes to appear. But, day after day, her plants were tomato-less while all of her neighbors who had also put out tomato plants were already enjoying the fruit of their labor.

Frustrated, Mertie gave in and went to the market to search fresh tomatoes. While paying, Mertie told the farmer her troubles. The farmer paused to think for

a moment and then asked, \"Well, what kind of tomatoes did you plant?\"

\"I think they were called Big Boy,\" Mertie remembered.

\"Well there's your problem,\" the farmer explained. \"Big Boy and Better Boy tomatoes have a 95-day growing period whereas regular tomato plants produce fruit in as few as 70 days…you just have to wait a little longer for the Big Boys.\"

With that new knowledge, Mertie went home with excitement, knowing they would be worth the wait.

Thinking about my sister's gardening experience, I had to smile. She just didn't know that Big Boy tomatoes took longer--neither did I — but once she discovered that information, she was no longer discouraged and upset about the lack of tomatoes on her plants. Instead, she was encouraged and excited to see them a few weeks later.

It makes me wonder how many of us have \"Big Boy\" dreams in our hearts, yet we just don't realize that they are of the \"Big Boy\" variety so we are discouraged and worn out with the waiting process. Instead of waiting with excitement, we give up on our dreams and figure we must have done something wrong to stop them from coming to pass. Frustrated, we see other people's dreams coming true, and we wonder why ours haven't yet been achieved.

(1)What is not mentioned in the passage when growing tomato plants?

A. Using suitable fertilizer. B. Keeping them well apart.

C. Watering them regularly. D. Controlling pests on them.

(2)Why did Mertie's tomato plants fail to produce at the expected time?

A. Because they were destroyed by her neighbors. B. Because she grew the wrong kind of tomatoes.

C. Because she didn't manage the garden well. D. Because they required more time to produce.

(3)What does the author compare tomatoes to in the text?

A. Goals. B. Experiences. C. Time. D. Imagination.

(4)What does the text intend to show us?

A. It's better late than never. B. A bad beginning makes a bad ending.

C. Success sometimes needs a little patience. D. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

【答案】(1)C

(2)D

(3)A

根据第二段中的“Mertie researched exactly how far apart to space her tomato plants; what kind of fertilizer to use; how to keep away the bugs, etc.”

根据第五段中的“Big Boy and Better Boy tomatoes have a 95-day growing period whereas regular tomato plants produce fruit in as few as 70 days…you just have to wait a little longer for the Big Boys.”

根据最后一段中的“It makes me wonder how many of us have ‘Big Boy’ dreams in our hearts, ……Instead of waiting with excitement, we give up on our dreams and……we see other people's dreams coming true, ……”

No poem should ever be discussed or \"analyzed\by someone, teacher or student. Better still, perhaps, is the practice of reading it twice, once at the beginning of the discussion and once at the end, so the sound of the poem is the last thing one hears of it.

All discussions of poetry are, in fact, preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading of the poem is, finally, the most telling 'interpretation' of it, suggesting tone, rhythm, and meaning all at once. Hearing a poet read the work in his or her own voice, on records or on film, is obviously a special reward. But even those aids to teaching cannot replace the student and teacher reading it or, best of all, reciting it.

I have come to think, in fact, that time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than \"analyzing\" it, if there isn't time for both. I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love poetry. Poetry is \"a criticism of life\

truth of feeling\and it \"can save your life\". It also deserves a place in the teaching of language and literature more central than it presently occupies.

I am not saying that every English teacher must teach poetry. Those who don't like it should not be forced to put that dislike on anyone else. But those who do teach poetry must keep in mind a few things about its essential nature, about its sound as well as its sense, and they must make room in the classroom for hearing poetry as well as thinking about it.

(1)The passage indicates that analyzing a poem is .

A. not essential at all appreciating it

B. a preparation for

C. an approach to understanding it D. optional in class sometimes

(2)The recitation of a poem by the teacher or a student in the classroom . A. is the best way to understand it B. easily arouses some discussion among the students

C. helps the teacher to analyze it D. can not take the place of the poet reading it

(3)Which of the following statements may the author agree with?

A. The most important teaching goal is to have students read and recite every poem they learn.

B. Poetry is the foundation of all languages and literature courses.

C. The teaching of poetry should have been much more stressed.

D. Every English teacher is supposed to convey their love of poetry to their students.

【答案】 (1)D

(2)A

(3)C

根据第三段中的“I have come to think, in fact, that time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than 'analyzing' it, if there isn't time for both”可知,如果课堂上没有时间同时朗读和分析诗歌的话,把时间花在朗读上比花在分析上要值得多,因此“分析诗歌”是可选择的的。

根据第二段中的“the reading of the poem is, finally, the most telling 'interpretation' of it, suggesting tone, rhythm, and meaning all at once”告诉我们,朗读归根到底是对诗的最全面诠释;再根据“But even those aids to

teaching cannot replace the student and teacher reading it or, best of all, reciting it”又告诉我们,即使是那些教学辅助手段也不能取代学生和老师朗读,更不能取代理解诗歌的最有效方法——背诵。故选A。

根据第三段中的“It(指poetry) also deserves a place in the teaching of language and literature more central than it presently occupies”告诉我们在语言和文学教学中,诗歌本应该获得比目前更加重要的位置,即诗歌教学本该得到更多的重视。故选C。

It could have been any of us, but it happened to be me. I received a brief 18-months of undivided attention and love as the only child, before three more appeared. The second was a severe blow. No doubt, learning the need to share was important, but I had tasted the life of an only child.

Then came years of requests to look after the siblings(兄弟姐妹), being urged that, You should be setting a better example, “Again and again the others got away with doing wrong but I didn't. We each played our roles; the second one who later skipped school to meet boys; the ever so attractive third, the boy who could do no wrong; and finally the surprise appearance of the fourth, seemed certain to be spoiled even now. So that left me: the reasonable, quiet one who got the grades, did the housework and became a chameleon(变色龙)—skilled at reading a situation and being what was needed.

Then eventually came the chance to be the first to leave and experience life on the outside, not defined(定义)as the eldest. The moment I had waited for. But now, many years later, being the eldest matters again. It's down to me; it seems, to take the lead in caring for our parents, AH the time I was made to learn about sharing; however, when it comes to responsibility, it no longer seems to apply. The others are too busy, too far away, or too unconcerned. So dutifully I travel many times across the country for hours to provide care and support.

Requests to my siblings to help out more fall on deaf ears. To me, the dutiful first born, it feels like the right and only thing to do; to be there for our parents as they were for us. Sadly, that feeling isn't shared by the second, third or fourth.

(1)How does the author comment on the four children in the second paragraph?

A. Angrily and Bitterly. B. Angrily and proudly.

C. Bitterly and humorously. D. Humorously and proudly.

(2)How did the author develop his social skills?

A. Through hard work. B. With the parents' help.

C. At the parents' request. effectiveness.

D. In practice for

(3)What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refers to?

A. To care for the old. B. To help the young.

C. To live outside alone. D. To travel nationwide.

(4)What can we learn from the text?

A. The writer hates to be the eldest. B. The writer feels proud of his role.

C. The writer is satisfied with his attempt. D. The writer is regretful about the siblings.

【答案】(1)C

(2)C

(3)A

(4)D

Then came years of requests to look

after the siblings(兄弟姐妹), being urged that, You should be setting a better example,” 接下来是多年来被要求照顾兄弟姐妹,被敦促树立一个好的榜样。

To me, the dutiful first born, it feels like the right and only thing to do; to be there for our parents as they were for us.

One of the most striking findings of a newly research in the UK is that of the people interviewed, one in two believes that it is becoming more difficult to meet someone to start a family with.

Why are many finding it increasingly difficult to start close relationships? Does modem life really make it harder to fall in love? Or are we making it harder for ourselves? It is certainly the case today that contemporary couples benefit in different ways from relationships. Women no longer rely upon partners for money or status. A man doesn't expect his wife to be in (唯一的) charge of running his household and raising his children.

But perhaps the knowledge that we can live perfectly well without a partnership means that it takes much more to persuade people to abandon their independence.

In theory, finding a partner should be much simpler these days. Only a few generations ago, your choice of soul mate was limited by geography, social convention and family tradition. Although it was never clear, many marriages were essentially arranged. Now those barriers have been broken down. You can approach a builder or a brain surgeon in any bar in any city on any given evening.

When the world is your oyster ( 牡蛎), you surely have a better chance of finding a pearl.

But it seems that the old conventions have been replaced by the limitations of choice. The expectations of partners are raised to an unmanageable degree: good looks, impressive salary, kind to grandmother, and right socks. There is no room for error in the first impression.

We think that a relationship can be perfect. If it isn't, it should be ended. We work to protect ourselves against future heartache and don't put in the hard emotional labor needed to build a strong relationship. Twelve-hour work at the office makes relaxed after-hours dating difficult. The cost of housing and child-raising creates pressure to have a stable income and Career before a life partnership.

(1)What is a contemporary family like in UK today?

A. Couples share the burdens. B. Men begin to depend on women.

C. Women are responsible for housework. D. It is difficult to take care of a family.

(2)Why do people preserve their independence?

A. To live alone happily. B. To have more choices.

C. To avoid marriages. D. To ignore traditions.

(3)What makes it hard for people to date?

A. Mental headache in dating. B. The pressure to survive.

C. Bad luck in finding a partner. D. The faith between life partners.

(4)What is the author trying to inform us in this text?

A. Perfect marriages conflict with independence.

B. People should, spend more money on marriages.

C. The expectations and reality separate the lovers.

D. Independence is much more important than love.
