The Great Wall is the only man-made structure on the earth visible from the moon. It was built during the Warring States period (476—221 B. C.) to prevent invasions by the nomadic nations from the north. It was completed by the first Qin emperor who united China into one country. The first Qin emperor mobilized several hundred thousand builders to link sections of the previous walls, thus completing what is known today as the Great Wall of China. The wall is 6,700 kilometers long from Shanhaikuan, which overlooks the gulf of Bo Hai, to Jiayuguan Pass in Gansu Province. The average height of the wall is 7.8 meters, and its width averages 6.5 meters at the base and 5.8 meters at the top. Rectangular lookout posts were built about every 100 meters.
The section of the Great Wall frequented by tourists is in Badaling, 75 kilometers to the North of Beijing.

Before I went to the Great Wall, I felt embarrassed to answer the question
of 'Have you been to the Great Wall?' as I had never been to the Great Wall.
The reason was clear. In Chinese there is saying 'The man who has never
been to the Great Wall is not a great guy'. True or not people believe it
is a pity for not seeing the marvel left by our forefathers. Last year I
went the Great Wall near Beijing and became a 'great guy' according to the
Chinese popular saying. Actually not. When I was standing on the Great Wall,
I was thinking, I or to be exactly we, the modern people are far far from
claiming to be great guy in front of the wall because we are still not comparable
to our forefathers who completed the huge project. Even we have the technology,
the machines and computers that the they didn't have, the difficulty to
build a wall like that it is still beyond our imagination. Our forefathers
were really a group of great guys.
