WHAT can help you make a fortune in the future? Graduating from a top university might not be enough. A new study from the University of Essex in Britain has shown that the more friends you have in school, the more money you’ll earn later.
The idea that popularity could have a serious influence on one’s earning potential shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. The researchers noted that if you want to get ahead in life, social skills and networking are easily as powerful as talent and hard work.
“If a person has lots of friends, it means that he or she has the ability to get along with others in all kinds of different situations,” said Xu Yanchun, 17, from Nantou High School in Shenzhen, who totally agreed with the recent finding. “Also, friends always help each other. They not only create wider social circles for you but lift your mood when you are occasionally in low spirits,” said Xu. She believed that all this helps you “earn a higher salary.”
Maybe that’s why some people think the younger generations are in the age of Friendalholism (交友狂症)? A woman even complained that the networking website Facebook’s 5,000-friend limit was too low for her large reserve of social contacts.

But what does friend mean? Should friends be regarded as a form of currency?
“Call me uncool, but I think of a friend as an actual person with whom I have an actual history and whom I enjoy actually seeing. It seems, however, that this is no longer the definition of friend”, said Meghan Daum, who works with The Los Angeles Times in the US.
Daum dislikes the idea that quantity trumps quality in the age of friendaholism. She thought the idea of friendship, at least among the growing population of Internet social networkers, was to get as many of not-really-friends as possible. For example, a friend might be someone you might know personally but who could just as easily be the friend of a friend of some other Facebook friend you don’t actually know. Although she agreed that social ties grease(润滑)the wheels of life, she also warned. “ Too bad one thing money can’t buy is a real friend.”
56. What can friends do in the eyes of Xu Yanchun? A. They can help you with your schoolwork. B. They teach you how to make more money. C. They help you to get rid of sadness and cheer up D. They introduce their friends to you.
57. What will be needed if you are to achieve success according to the researchers? A. Social skills, friends, good mood and fortune. B. Social skills, networking, talent and hard work.. C. Social skills, networking, potential and fortune. D. Social skills, talent, hard work and the facebook.
58. We learn that Meghan Daum’s attitude towards friends-is somewhat . A. up-to-date B. optimistic C. confused D. traditional 59. What does the word “trumps” in the last paragraph mean?

I credit my typing skills to so many hours of chatting online. Unfortunately, as my typing speed increased on the Internet, all grammatical rules went out of the
www.wujiajiaoyu.com,中小学直线提分,就选福州五佳教育
window. You see, instant messengers have their own shorthand language and grammar isn’t important, of which even a newbie(新手) is aware. They can leave out articles, subjects, pronouns, etc. They can misspell or “re-spell” almost any word. They often ask “A/S/L” when they first chat. Abbreviations and capitalizations are particularly important, English-speaking instant messengers also refuse to .burden themselves with punctuation and capitalization.
After I came back China, I discovered not one but two instant messaging crazes. The first, which brought back memories of my previous addiction to the computer, was QQ. I can see evidence that the Chinese have the same kind of separate instant messaging language, even when they chat in English. My first word in this language, for example, was “ft”. This abbreviation for “faint” is used whenever there is a need to express surprise. I also discovered that the Chinese use the same kind of abbreviation for a laugh. And there is an extraordinary number of smileys and icons available to express every emotion and reaction, from the traditional “sleepy” and “doubtful” smileys to the “vomit” and “army soldier’ smileys. There’s even a SARS smiley.
After QQ, there is another, perhaps more widespread, messaging trend. You guessed it-cell phone text messaging I now understand how useful text messaging is and why it is so common. I admit that I have been guilty of sending text messages while walking outside or sitting on the subway. Who hasn’t? No matter where I go, I see people on their cell phones, messaging. In fact, it’s rare to see someone actually talking on their phone!
So it looks as if there’s no escape from the instant messaging crazes, no matter where in the world I go. And that’s plainly not going to change. In the end, though, I can’t complain: instant messaging is quick, it’s cheap, it’s easy and it’s extreme fun too. And after all, everybody’s doing it.
64. The underlined phrase “went out of the window” in paragraph 1 probably means . A. increased B. occurred C. disappeared D. changed 65. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Grammar and correct spelling are very important while chatting online. B. There are enough smileys and icons to express yourselves while chatting online. C. The writer is skilled at typing and once was addicted to online games.
D. It is impolite to leave out some unimportant words or letters while chatting online. 66. The writer believes that instant messaging is .

C. Chatting online is good for your typing skills D. chatting on QQ is natural for people

We produce 500 billion of plastic bags in a year worldwide and they are thrown away polluting oceans, killing wildlife and getting dumped in landfills where they take up to 1,000 years to decompose. Researchers have been unsuccessfully looking for a solution.
The 16-year-old Canadian high school student, Daniel Burd, from Waterloo Collegiate Institute, has-discovered a way to make plastic bags degrade(降解) in as few as 3 months, a finding that won him first prize at the Canada Wide Science Fair, a $10,000 prize, a $20,000 scholarship, and a chance to revolutionize a major environmental issue.
Burd’s strategy was simple: Since plastic does eventually degrade, it must be eaten by microorganisms (微生物). If those microorganisms could be identified, we could put them to work eating the plastic much faster than under normal conditions.
With this goal in mind, he grounded plastic bags into a powder and concocted(调制) a solution of household chemicals, yeast(酵母) and tap water to encourage microbes growth. Then he added the plastic powder and let the microbes work their magic for 3 months. Finally, he tested the resulting bacterial culture on plastic bags, exposing one plastic sample to dead bacteria as a control. Sure enough, the plastic exposed(暴露)to the live bacteria was 17% lighter than the control after six weeks.
The inputs are cheap, maintaining the required temperature takes little energy because microbes produce heat as they work, and the only outputs are water and tiny levels of carbon dioxide.
“Almost every week I have to do chores and when I open the closet door, I have piles of plastic bags falling on top of me. One day, I got tired of it and I wanted to know what other people are doing with these plastic bags. The answer: not much. So I decided to do something myself.”

Nowadays people are troubled by the violence that spreads throughout the media. Movies, television and video games are full of gunplay and bloodshed, and one might reasonably ask what’s wrong with a society that presents videos of violence as entertainment.
Viewing large amounts of violent television and video games may well contribute to violent behavior in certain individuals. The trouble comes when researchers downplay uncertainties in their studies or overstate the case for causality(因果关系). Skeptics(怀疑论者) were dismayed several years ago when a group of societies including the American Medical Association tried to end the debate by issuing a joint statement: “At this time, well over 1,000 studies„ point to a
www.wujiajiaoyu.com,中小学直线提分,就选福州五佳教育
causal connection between media violence and aggressive(放肆) behaviors in some children.”
Freedom-of-speech advocates accused the societies of appealing to politicians, and even disputed the number of studies (most were review articles and essays, they said). When Jonathan Freedman, a social psychologist at the University of Toronto, reviewed the literature, he found only 200 or so studies of television-watching and aggression. And when he weeded out “ the most doubtful measures of aggression”, only 28% supported a connection.
The critical point here is causality. The alarmists say they have proved that violent media cause aggression. But the assumptions behind their observations need to be examined. When labeling games as violent or non-violent, should a hero eating a ghost really be counted as a violent event? And when experimenters record the time it takes game players to read “aggressive” or “non-aggressive” words from a list, can we be sure what they are actually measuring? The intention of the new Harvard Center on Media and Child Health to collect and standardize studies of media violence in order to compare their methodologies, assumptions and conclusions is an important step in the right direction.
Another appropriate step would be to tone down the criticism until we know more. Several researchers write, speak and testify quite a lot on the threat posed by violence in the media. That is, of course, their privilege. But when doing so, they often come out with statements that the matter has now been settled, drawing criticism from colleagues. In response, the alarmists accuse critics and news reporters of being deceived by the entertainment industry. Such clashes help neither science nor society.
72. Why is there so much violence shown in movies TV and video games? A. There is a lot of violence in the real world today. B. Something has gone wrong with today’s society. C. Many people are fond of gunplay and bloodshed. D. Showing violence is thought to be entertaining. 73. What is the skeptics’ view of media violence?
A. Violence on television is fairly accurate reflection of real-world life. B. A Causal relationship exists between media and real-world violence C. Most studies overstate the effect of media violence on the viewers. D. The influence of media violence on children has been underestimated.

75. What does the writer think of the debate concerning the relationship between the media and violence?
A. He more than agrees with the views held by the alarmists. B. It should come to an end since the matter has now been settled. C. The past studies in this field have proved to be misleading. D. More studies should be conducted before conclusions are drawn. 第四部分 写作

M: Yes, she is an excellent cook and she is very friendly. After we had been there for a couple of hours, we didn’t feel like guests. We felt like members of the family. W: Where did you have your picnic?
M: That was fun. We went out in the boat which we borrowed. W: What did you do that for? M: To get to the island.
W: Oh, you had your picnic on an island, did you?
M: That’s right. It was great. The sun was hot and the water was warm. What a day! W: It sounds like a good day. Did everyone else enjoy it, too?

M: Oh, yes. We will probably never forget it. (Text 10)
M: Hello, everyone. My name’s Karl Roberts, and I’ll be your teacher of this course, Language and Culture.
To begin with, please take a look at the teaching programme in front of you. As you should all know by now, this course is given on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:15 to 4:50 in the afternoon. We will be meeting in this room for the first half of the course, but we will be suing the research lab every other week on Friday in Room 405 during the last two months of the course.
Uh, this is the text for this lesson, Beyond Language. Unfortunately, the books haven’t come in yet, but I was told that you should be able to buy them at the bookstore the day after tomorrow. Again, as you see on your course outline, the grade is determined by your performance in the midterm and final exams, classroom tests, and on your research work. My office hours are from 9:00 to 12:00 on Wednesdays, and you can set up a date to meet me at other times as well.

The importance of communication
We can see from the picture that just beside the door, two men are holding a heavy box. They are very tired, with sweat pouring down from their faces. Though each of them makes great efforts to move the box, it still stays at the same place, for they have opposite opinions in their minds. One thinks that it should be carried out of the room, while the other considers that it should be carried in.
If they share their opinions, they can reach an agreement and work together to move the box much more easily and save a lot of time and energy. The problem is common among us teenagers„„„„„„„„„„„„„„„„„„(略) So good communication is the first step towards effective work.
