Happiness can be described as a positive mood and a pleasant state of mind. According to recent polls (民意调查), sixty to seventy percent of Americans consider themselves to be moderately happy and one in twenty persons feels very unhappy. Psychologists have been studying the factors that contribute to happiness. It is not predictable, nor is a person in an apparently ideal situation necessarily happy. Charity Engine mostly uses its computing power for companies doing scientific, medical or commercial research. For example, Rosetta@home attempts to help find cures for serious diseases by discovering the shapes of proteins. Another project, Einstein@Home, tests scientific theories. And another helps establishments in Africa such as universities search for ways to fight the spread of malaria.
The Charities
Charity Engine gives 50 percent of the profits from renting out computing power to various charities. Each organization it supports has a good reputation for working in an area of vital importance. Most of them seek to address the primary causes of poverty while bringing short-term relief. These include Oxfam, a network of organizations in 94 countries. Another is CARE International, one of the three largest international aid agencies, which works in 87 countries. Charity Engine also supports Doctors Without Borders, which supplies medical care, and WaterAid, which provides safe water and promotes hygiene (卫生) in developing countries. Unlike the previous exam of this term, this test will not include multiple choice questions. It will consist entirely of essays, which involve many skills of writing. You will have to answer three of the five questions. The exam will be comprehensive. This means you will be responsible for all of the subject matter we’ve covered in class. I suggest you go over what we have learned as well as the textbook and your class notes. This exam will count for 50% of your grade in the course, the research project will count for 20%, and your rest work 30%.

Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.
Passengers may want to have their tickets in hand before catching their planes, but the airline companies are doing everything they can to bring forward cost-saving electronic ticket flight — no paper needed, just a ticket number and a photo ID card. Anyone who buys a Northwest e-ticket through the airline’s computer service by June 16 will get an award. Next time you fly, you can buy another ticket for a friend for $99, good anywhere in the U.S. or Canada through Dec., 12, 2013 along with the lowest ticket prices.
Some airlines offer extra frequent passenger miles for the electronic ticket crowd. And there are rising punishment for paper lovers. Last week America, Northwest, United, and US Airways have raised the cost for lost-ticket replacement to $70 from either $60 or $50.
