Sometimes a certain day has a special meaning. Fridays meant a trip to a senior nursing home

downtown for me. It seemed as if this nursing home needed help, but 16 did I know it would help me, too.

During my first visit I was asked to 17 some of the female residents' nails. I carefully 18 the old color on their nails. As I applied new color, one woman 19 to tell me about her hidden pains, from her husband’s death to the one 20 she wanted most: a camera. I listened carefully. She smiled 21 , with some of her past pains taken off her mind. I left the nursing home that day, 22 by the fact that I had actually helped somebody.

I realized that my 23 actions, just listening, for example, could make a(n) 24 to others' lives. One woman, who happily commented that we 25 the same first name, confided (吐露) her opinions to me. Another 26 showed me a birthday card her children had sent her. Of course, not all of the conversations were 27 .When one elderly woman talked to me about 28 her13-year-old daughter would be graduating from middle school this year, I didn’t know what to do but nod and listen, 29 that her daughter must have graduated decades ago.

Although I could not 30 more years to the lives of these elderly residents, I could give them something simple that's often 31 in our society. Through our conversations, I gave them the 32 that in this fast-paced world, they were not forgotten—that members of younger generations still cared about them.

Every moment I spend 33 is an opportunity to reduce their pain. 34 , that moment also shapes me. I not only learn about life and experiences outside of school but also receive the gift of being part of this 35 —the connection between humans. Those moments of sharing and listening are magical for both the giver and the receiver. 16. A. still B. little C. already D. indeed 17. A. polish B. wash C. cut D. check 18. Like most young couples, my husband and I didn’t have money for luxurious gifts on our first wedding anniversary. We were 41 to have a meal and watch a romantic movie at home. Simply being able to enjoy each other’s 42 was enough. No gift on earth could come close to 43 our love for one another.

So when the mailman knocked on the door, I was very 44 to see a medium-sized package from my mother. Both eager and curious to see what was awaiting us in the package, I 45 tore open the box and immediately my eyes were filled with tears. Inside the box was a 46 folded quilt my mother had made by hand. It was white with rose 47 and gold thread. The backing 48 beautiful tiny purple flowers.

Accompanying the quilt was a 49 from my mother:

“Happy Anniversary ! 50 is a quilt. The purple was your wedding colour and the gold thread 51 the golden rings you two exchanged on your wedding day. May this quilt keep you warm when times are cold and 52 you of the day you said your vows--Love, Mom.”

I was touched 53 words. I knew my mom surely had sacrificed to be able to afford this. The time alone to sew such a detailed quilt was 54 to me. I just 55 my mother coming home from a long day at work and staying up 56 the early hours of the next morning delicately 57 the quilt together. We both knew a part of my mom’s 58 was sewn right into the quilt. How could any gift ever compare to such a genuine gift?

Many years have passed since our first anniversary, but neither of us has 59 the beautiful quilt. My husband always jokes that the best anniversary 60 I have ever received wasn’t from him but from my mother, and I agree. 41.A. eager B. discouraged C. content D. upset 42.A. concentration B. company C. comfort D. reliance 43.A.expressing B. explaining C. declaring D. describing 44.A.depressed B. disappointed C. scared D. surprised 45.A. carelessly B. slowly C. quickly D. casually 46.A. roughly B. neatly C. messily D. totally 47.A. patterns 48.A. consisted of 49.A. bill 50.A .Donated 51.A.represents 52.A. inform 53.A.in 54.A.unimaginable 55.A.saw 56.A.before

I stopped trying to put on a show because no one was 56 anymore. Later, I volunteered at the graduation ceremony. She was called to make a(n) 57 and discussed their difficulties. 【五】 I don’t know why I came to the decision to become a loser, but I know I made the choice at a young age. Sometime in the middle of the fourth grade, I stopped 41 . But now I believe in do-overs, in the chance to do it all over 47 . And I believe that do-overs can be made at any 48 in your life, if you have the right motivation. Actually, my motivation as a man came from a surprising 49 . It was September 21, 2002, when my son Blake was born. It was funny that after a life of avoiding 50 , now I was in charge of something so fragile. Over the years, as I grew into the title of 51 , I began to learn something about myself. 52 , Blake and I were both learning to walk, talk, work, and play for the first time. I began my do-over. It took me almost three years to learn how to 53 . I started with my son’s books. Over and over, I 54 reading books to him until I remembered all the 55 in every one of them. I began wonder if it was possible for me to go back to 56 . I knew I wanted to be a good role 57 , so after a year-and-a-half and a lot of hard work, I 58 my GED test on my son’s fourth birthday. This may not sound like much, but all things 59 , it was one of the best days in ray life. Today, I’m a full-time college student, studying to become a sociologist. It’s funny that growing up I always heard these great turn-around stories of triumph over shortcomings. 60 , I never thought they applied to me. Now I believe it’s a choice anyone can make: to do it all over again. 41. A. trying 42. A. crazy 43. A. jumped out of 44. A. adult 45. A. dedicated 46. A. concern 47. A. violently 48. A. entrance 49. On June 23, 1970. I had just left the Army after completing my one-year duty in Vietnam. I was on 41 returning home in Texas. I had been warned about the _42_ of our fellow countrymen. There was no 43

welcome for us when we came home from that unpopular war.

I sat, in uniform, in a window seat, 44 eye contact with my fellow passengers. NO one was sitting next to me, which added to my _45__. A little girl suddenly appeared in the passage. She _46_ and, without saying a word, 47 handed me a magazine. I accepted her 48 , her quiet “welcome home.” All I could say was, “Thank you.” Her small gesture of 49 was the first I had experienced in a long time.

I always believe in the connection between 50 when they reach out to one another.

That girl 51 has no memory of what happened years ago. She might have been told to do that by her mother. It doesn’t matter 52 she gave me the magazine. The _53 thing is that she did.

Since then, I have followed her example and tried. in different ways for different people, to 54 for them. Like me on that plane ride long ago, they will _55_ know why a stranger gave a hand.
