The world’s biggest tech companies agreed to a European Union code of conduct curbing hate speech and terrorist propaganda. Google, Facebook, Twitter and Microsoft promised to review most complaints within 24 hours, removing the offending material if necessary. But free-speech advocates worry that controversial and satirical material will fall victim to complaints from authoritarian or thin-skinned regimes.

An American judge ruled that the buyout in 2013 of Dell by Michael Dell and Silver Lake was 22% below the fair value. Dozens of stockholders who had opposed the $24.9 billion deal, and who filed the suit in Delaware to elicit a fair valuation by the court, may now be owed tens of millions of dollars.

More than one-third of the coral in the northern and central parts of the Great Barrier Reef is dead or dying, scientists said.The chief culprit for the mass bleaching of the past two months is high water temperatures—partly from the El Niño weather phenomenon, but aggravated by global warming. In its largest-ever deal, Microsoft bought LinkedIn, an ailing professional-networking and job-hunting site, for $26.2 billion. Shares in the software giant dipped 3% on the news; LinkedIn’s stock soared by 47%. It has 100m active monthly users but has seen its share price slump amid worries that companies are cutting back on recruitment costs.

Iran’s civil-aviation authorities said they had agreed to buy 100 planes from Boeing, pending final permission from the American Treasury Department. The deal could be worth $17 billion. As sanctions ease, the American aircraft-manufacturer is trying to catch up its European rival Airbus, which has provisionally sold Iran 118 jets for $27 billion.

For the third quarter in a row, Tesla missed its delivery targets. The electric-carmaker delivered 14,370 cars in its second quarter, against a planned 17,000. The firm has struggled with producing its SUV-style Model X, blaming an ambitious design and supply-chain troubles. Tesla is under sharp regulatory scrutiny after the death of a driver using its “Autopilot” self-driving feature.

Shares in Nintendo rose by nearly a quarter following the success of the Japanese company’s new Pokémon Go game, in which users hunt characters in real-world locations using smartphones, helped by in-game purchases. It immediately headed the American gaming charts. Nintendo’s previous hits, like Super Mario, used gaming consoles. Pokémon Go is a joint venture with Niantic, a Google spin-out.

The purge of state institutions in Turkey intensified as the authorities sacked more than 15,000 education workers, including university professors and deans. The teaching licenses of 21,000 private-school staff were revoked. At least 45,000 public servants have now been suspended or detained for alleged collusion with the failed coup.

Facebook股价飙升

Facebook’s quarterly results roundly beat expectations. Overall revenues were up 59% year-on-year, to $6.4 billion, helped by spiking sales of video advertisements and ads on Instagram, the social-media giant’s picture-sharing platform. The firm now makes 84% of its advertising income from mobile ads, and has 1.7 billion users monthly. Shares rose 5% in late trading.

Uber reached a deal to sell its operations in China to Didi Chuxing, its arch-rival there, an acknowledgment that its costly campaign to conquer the ride-sharing market in China is over. Uber is taking a 17.7% stake in Didi as a consolation prize. Uber and Didi had spent billions in a fare war; this week Uber’s fares reportedly soared.
