A famous study was done in a school by a professor (教授) from a university. At the start of the school year, the teachers were given the names of five children. They were told that these five were the most excellent students in the class. But the fact was that these students were only average (中等),and they were not the best students at all. Well, guess what? At the end of the year, all the five average students scored among the highest in the class.

What made these average students change so much to become top students? The only difference was the change in their teachers‘ attitude (态度). Because the teachers believed that these five kids were the top students, they expected more from them. And so these five average students began to believe and expect more from themselves. So they worked harder to do as well as they could.

Do you know? If you expect the best from people, they‘ll usually want to give you their best. A great leader said, ―Treat (对待) a person just how he appears to be on the outside, and you‘ll make him even worse. But treat a person like he‘s already a success, and you‘ll help make him the best he can be.‖ Like the true story of 7-year-old Johnny, his teacher got so angry with him that one day she said, ―Johnny, you‘re the naughtiest boy in this class. I‘m sure you‘ll never change.‖ The next year Johnny had a new teacher. And on the first day of class, she talked with Johnny after school and said, ―Johnny, I‘ve heard a lot about you! But do you know that I don‘t believe a word of it.‖ And every day after that, this new teacher treated Johnny as if he was one of the smartest students even when Johnny did naughty things. Later on, Johnny became a school leader. Because that‘s the power of our belief (信任) and attitude toward children.

You may be a top student, but imagine if you have to leave alone, will life be as easy as when your parents are around? Few teenagers are able to give a positive answer to this question. The first thing that worries Xiao Hua is where to find food. The 14-year-old student says that she knows little about cooking. ―The only thing I can make to fill my stomach is tomato and egg soup, and I think many of my classmates are the same,‖ she said.

You should make each other happy and share your lives. But things cannot always be happy. Even the

best have fights. What should you do when you have a fight with your friend? You have to talk to him or her. When there is no one around, have an honest talk. If he or she doesn't want to talk, you could write a letter.

In one way, it may be thought that failure (失败)is a part of life. In another, failure may be re¬garded as a step towards success.

The \"spider-story\" is often told as an example of this. Robert Bruce, leader of the Scots in the 13th century, was hiding in a hole on a hill from the English. He watched a spider(蜘蛛) making a web. Bruce is said to have got confidence from this and to have gone on to beat the English. Edison, too, the inventor of the light bulb(电灯泡) , made hundreds of models that failed before he found the right way to make one.

So what? First, always think about your failure. What caused it? Were you in high spir¬it then? What can you change so that things will go right the next time?

Second, is the goal(目标) you are trying to reach the right one? Try to do some thinking about what your real goals may be. Think about this question: \"If I am successful in this, where will it get me?\" This may help to prevent failure in the things you shouldn't be doing anyway.

The third thing to remember about failure is that it's a part of life. Learn to \"live with yourself‖ even though you may have failed. Remember, \"You can't win them all. ― 51.Robert Bruce was mentioned in the passage to show that .

Premier Wen Jiabao‘s visit to India this week takes this friendship to a new high. He said 2006 will be the ―Year of China-India Friendship‖. The two big Asian countries now work more closely on border problems, trade (贸易) and IT.

India is an interesting and mysterious country with a long history. Around 2,000 BC, Indian civilization(文明),was born. It is one of the four oldest civilizations in the wor ld. India is also the birthplace of Buddhism(佛教).

A famous Chinese novel, ―A Journey to the West‖, is about a Chinese monk who tried very hard to learn about Buddhism from India. The book comes from a true story. Xuanzang, a Buddhist monk, was sent to India by the King of the Tang Dynasty. After many years, he brought back lots of Buddhist books. The name ―India‖ was first used by Xuanzang in his work.

Today, religion is still an important part of Indian culture. There are many religions there. Most Indian people believe in Hinduism (印度教).In India, cows are very special animals because Hinduism says they are holy (神圣的). So Indians don‘t sell or eat beef.

Like China, India is a developing country with a large population. It has about 1.03 billion people compared to China‘s 1.3 billion. More than two thirds of the Indians still live a poor life in the countryside. India has no birth control so its population is growing fast. By 2030, India could even have more people than China.

Hindi(印地语) is the mother tongue of Indian people. But Britain took India in 1757 and stayed there until 1947. Because of this, English slowly became the other official language. 61. A rabbit is running into its hole. You may ask, ―What happened?‖

Well, when a rabbit sees something dangerous, it runs away. Its tail moves up and down as it runs. When other rabbits see this tail moving up and down, they run too. They know that there is danger. The rabbit has told them something without making a sound. It has given them a signal. Many other animals use this kind of language. When a bee found some food, it goes back to his home. It cannot tell the other bees where the food is by speaking to them, but it does a little

dance in the air. This tells the bees where the food is.

Some animals say things by making sounds. A dog barks, for example, when a stranger comes near. A cat purrs (发出呼噜呼噜的声音)when pleased. Some birds make several different sounds, each with its own meaning.

But human beings have something that no animals have –-- a large number of words about things, actions, feelings or ideas. We are able to give each other information, to tell or inform other people what is in our mind or how we feel. By writing words down we can remind ourselves of the things what have happened, or send messages to people far away. No animals can do this. No animals has the wonderful power of language.

No one knows how man learned to make words. Somehow he learned to make them. As centuries went by , he made more and more new words. This is what we mean b y language. People living in different countries made different kinds of words. Today there are about fifteen hundred different languages in the world. A very large English dictionary, for example, contains four or five hundred thousand words. But we do not know all these. The words we know are called vocabulary. We should try to make our vocabulary larger. Read as many books as possible. When we meet a new word, look it up in the dictionary. A dictionary is the most useful book.

The word ―day‖ has two meanings. When we talk about the number of days in a year, we are using ―day‖ to mean 24 hours. But when we talk about day and night, we are using ―day‖ to mean the time between sunrise and sunset. Since the earth looks like a ball, the sun can shine on only half of it at a time. Always one half of the earth is having day and the other half night. A place is moved from day into night and from night into day over and over by the spinning(旋转) of the earth. At the equator(赤道) day and night are sometimes the same length. They are each twelve hours long. The sun rises at 6 in the morning and sets at 6 in the evening. For six months the North Pole is tilted(倾斜) toward the sun. In those months the Northern Hemisphere(半球) gets more hours of sunlight than the Southern Hemisphere. Days are longer than nights. South of the equator nights are longer than days. For the other six months the North Pole is tilted away from the sun. Then the Southern Hemisphere gets more sunlight. Days are longer than night. North of the equator nights are longer than days. Winter is the season of long nights. Summer is the season of long days.

You speak, write a letter, make a telephone. Your words carry a message. People communicate with words. Do you think you can communicate without words? A smile on your face shows you are happy or friendly. Tears in your eyes tell others that you are sad.

When you put up your hands in class, the teacher knows you want to say something or ask questions. You shake your head, and people know you are saying \"No\". You nod and people know you are saying \"Yes\". Other things can also carry messages. For example, a sign at the bus helps you to know which bus to take. A sign on the door helps you where to go in or out. Have you ever thought that there are a lot of signs around you and that you receive messages from them all the time? Just as in face-to-face communication, there are some basic rules of behavior(行为) that should be followed on the Internet. The basic rule is simple: treat others in the same way you would want to be treated. ①Imagine how you‘d feel if you were in the other person‘s shoes.

For anything you‘re about to send: ask yourself, ― Would I say that to the person‘s face?‖ If the answer is no, rewrite and reread. If someone in the chat room is rude to you, you needn‘t to fire back. You should either ignore(不理睬) the person, or use your chat software to block their messages. Remember to respect the beliefs and opinions of others in the chat room.

②Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they may not be sure what to do or how to communicate. When someone makes a mistake, be kind about it. If you do decide to tell someone about the mistake, point it out politely. At the same time, if you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologize to those that you have offended(冒犯).③询问别人诸如年龄、性别和家庭情况等隐私问题是不礼貌的。Unless you know the person very well, and you are both comfortable with sharing personal information, or don‘t ask such questions.

What do people do with their old, out-of-date but still useful computers? Most people don‘t know what to do with them. Many old computers are put away in homes. Many more are simply thrown out with the rubbish.

Finally, some companies are thinking of ways to bring down the number of old computers. Sony has agreed to help recycle old Sony products(产品). Dell, Hewlett-Packard and other companies now also take back some old computers.

In some countries, laws are being passed, too. Computer compan ies will have to collect and recycle their used products. And 70% of computer waste must be recycled. The idea behind the laws is that computer companies themselves should pay the cost. That will encourage them to make computers that are easier and cheaper to repair and upgrade(升级).

Yet while many people are throwing away good computers, others cannot afford them at all. Hundreds of organizations are working to solve this problem. They collect and repair old computers. Some also teach others how to repair computers.

The computers then go to schools, charities and people who need them. Giving a used computer to one of these organizations can turn one person‘s rubbish into someone else‘s useful things—and cut down on waste, too.

Thanksg iving Day was near. The first grade teacher, Miss Rainbow, ask her class to draw a picture of something that they thank for.

Just as the teacher th ought, most of her students drew something like turkey, pumpkins and other traditional things of the season.

But Douglas made a different kind of picture. Douglas was a different kind of boy. He was weak and unhappy. Usually when other children played, Douglas stood close by her side. She could feel his sadness and loneliness. When asked to draw a picture of something for which he was thankful, he drew a hand. Nothing else, just an empty hand.

His special picture woke up the imagination of his classmates. Whose hand could it be? One child guessed it was the hand of a farmer, because farmers raise turkeys. Another said it was from a police

officer, because the police protected people. The teacher went to Douglas‘ desk and asked him whose hand it was. The little boy looked away and said, ―It‘s yours, Miss Rainbow. Los Angeles is a city of ―so park poor and so car rich‖. It is the most car-heavy city in the world, with 1.8 cars for every person. And with all those cars on the road, Los Angeles is cons idered a dangerous city for bike riding.

Imagine Los Angeles without cars. Every Sunday, major roads in the city were closed to cars. And people were invited to spend time riding on the roads. It sounds like impossible in such a car-heavy city. But a group called cicLAvia wants to make it come true. In the group, there are bicycle lovers, transportation experts(专家) and artists. They want to change busy Los Angeles roads into large bike lanes every Sunday to create public space that joins every neighborhood in the city together.

―Air pollution is terrible and children become heavier and heavier, but it‘s difficult to make people get out of their cars. People really need exercise, but building new parks for people to exercise can be much too expensive. So we are thinking about using the space we have already had——our roads.‖ said a member of cicLAvia.

Although it seems like a great challenge in such a city, the members of cicLAvia are very confident. They have got the support from the Mayor. They are trying to make the car-free day successful in Los Angeles. 66. Why is Los Angeles considered a dangerous city for bike rider? ___________________________________________________________ 67. When later train came, Todd was swept forward onto the train by the rush of the people from behind. The doors closed and the train moved off before he was able to get his breath back. Idioms are phrases and sentences that do not mean exactly what they say. Even if you know the meaning of each word you see or hear, you may not understand the idiom because you don‘t understand the culture behind it.

For example, if an American boy asks his mother what‘s for dinner tomorrow, she may say ―I‘ll play it by ear‖, that means she doesn‘t have plans for dinner and she will decide later. ―Play by ear‖ used to mean playing music using the sheet music, but now people often use it when they‘re not talking about music. There‘re many idioms in English. If you learn to use them, your English will be more vivid and colorful. English idioms are more common in spoken English. They can be difficult to remember sometimes. Next time when you hear somebody saying to you, ―Give me a hand‖, you don‘t necessarily stretch out your hand to him/her, but you do need to be helpful. And when the situation is out of hand, you usually can do very little to manage all that. What about a green hand? It‘s not about the color of your hand! You‘re a green hand when you are very new at your work and don‘t have much experience. If you and your partner always work together hand in glove, you two definitely work together very well. Can you guess the meanings of some common English idioms to do with parts of your body? 51. An idiom is _______.

A. a phrase or a sentence that means exactly what the words say

B. a phrase or a sentence that doesn‘t mean exactly what every word says C. so difficult that nobody can understand D. something to do with parts of your body

52. If a mother says ―I‘ll play it by ear‖ to talk about the dinner, she means _______. A. she will cook dinner while listening to music at the same time B. she doesn‘t hear what others are talking about.

C. she will play music using the sheet music instead of cooking dinner D. She doesn‘t have plans for dinner and will decide later

53. When one says ―Can you give me a hand?‖, he means _______. A. he needs to hold your hand. B. he works well with you

C. he needs your help D. he is a new comer and can‘t help with the situation 54. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A. People use English idioms more in spoken English than in written English. B. To understand the culture behind an idiom is important in understanding the idiom.

C. Idioms make your English more vivid and colorful so they are easy to remember. D. You may not understand an idiom even though you know the meaning of each word.

55. Here are 4 common English idioms to do with parts of your body and their meanings. Can you match them?

1) to learn something by heart a. to depend on oneself 2) to have sticky fingers b. to know something very well 3) to stand on one‘s own feet c. to do something secretly 4) to go behind someone‘s back d. to have the habit of stealing A. badc B. bdac C. cbad D.cdba

56 When a teacher assigns a lot of homework, Domenica Roman draws up a timetable, dividing the assignment into small parts. ―It‘s like eating a steak(牛排),‖ she says. ―You chew it one bite at a time.‖ 57 One student put a vocabulary list in the bathroom. He learned a new word every day while brushing his teeth. Another student used the time to remember biology terms while practicing running.

58 In high school, McCray ran track, played football and was in the band and orchestra. ―I was so busy that I couldn‘t waste time looking for a pencil or missing paper. I kept everything right where I could put my hands on it,‖ he says.

59 In an international class, Asian-Americans, on average, scored higher than other students. The teacher found that the Asian-Americans discussed homework problems together, tried different ways to work out the problems and explained their solutions to one another.

60 Christi is an excellent student at the University of California. If her math teacher assigns five problems, she does ten. If the history teacher assigns eight pages of reading, she reads twelve. ―Part of learning is practicing,‖ she says. ―And the more you practice, the more you learn.‖ 答案:

When I was growing up in America, I was ashamed of my mother‘s Chinese English. Because of her English, she was often treated unfairly. People in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, pretended not to Understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her.

My mother has realized the disadvantages of her English as well. When I was fifteen, she used to have me call people on phone to pretend I was she. When I was younger, bedtime was always my favourite part of the day. Wearing soft pajamas and with Lan, my stuffed monkey, in my arms, I felt no pressure at all.

I named Lan after my uncle when I compared Lan‘s long arms and legs to his. One night I ran up to Uncle Lan at a family party and told him I had named my monkey after him. His eyebrows wrinkled in confusion, then a chuckle(哈哈笑)escaped his lips. I guess he didn‘t understand how important it was to me. Even if Uncle Lan didn‘t think my monkey was special, I certainly did. I dressed him in a white baby nightgown. My mother thought that Lan was the best-dressed stuffed animal in the world. Yes, he was certainly a fashionable creature. The strong cologne(科隆香水)I used on him years ago makes him still smell ―pretty‖.

For a long time, Lan went everywhere with me. He was my best friend, and I told him everything. But when I turned twelve, I realized I was too old for stuffed animals. I thought people would think I was babyish, so I put him in the cupboard with the rest of my teddy bears and dolls. I begged him to understand why I was doing this, but at the same time I longed to talk to him again.

It took me several years to realize that it was OK to miss Lan. I know now that maturity(成熟)doesn‘t only mean growing up and taking on more responsibility. It also means holding on to your childhood and acting young sometimes.

Lan has been with me since I was six years old. Holding him in my arms connects me to my past and my present as I continue to grow and understand myself. 46. Which of the following is not true according to the text?

Every day when I enter the classroom, I will take a look at the wall beside my seat. You will find nothing special about this old wall if you just look at it. But for the students in my class, it is a special wall. Take a good look at it, and you will get to know the real feelings and thoughts of us, the 9th graders. In the middle of the wall, there is a big ―VICTORY‖. It was written in pencil. I guess it must have been written by someone who got a good mark in an exam.

A little higher above the formulas, there is a poem. It only has two sentences. It reads: All those sweet memories have disappeared. Like tears dropping in the heavy rain.

Oh! It must have been written at the end of the last semester in middle school. Classmates had to leave school and good friends had to part. What a sad poem!

If you ―explore‖ the wall more carefully, you will find many other interesting things, like a crying face, or a happy face, and other patterns(图案). There are still some patterns and letters that I can‘t understand, but they all show the feeling of the students who drew them.

For years, the wall has witnessed(目睹) all the things that have happened in the classroom. I don‘t know how it will be next year, two years from now, or even ten years from now. But I hope more smiling faces will be drawn on it.

No one is glad to hear that his body has to be cut open by a surgeon(外科医生) and part of it is taken out. Today, however, we needn‘t worry about feeling pain during the operation. The sick person falls into a kind of sleep, and when he awakes, the operation is finished. But these happy conditions are fairly new. It is not many years since a man who had to have an operation felt all its pain.

Long ago, operations had usually to be done while the sick man could feel everything. The sick man had to be held down on a table by force while the doctors did their best for him. He could feel all the pain if his leg or arm was being cut off, and his fearful cries filled the room and the hearts of those who watched. Soon after 1770, Josept Priestley discovered a gas which is now called ―laughing gas‖. Laughing gas became known in America. Young men and women went to parties to try it. Most of them spent their time laughing, but one man at a party, Horace Wells, noticed that people didn‘t seem to feel pain when they were using this gas. He decided to make an experiment on himself. He asked a friend to help him. Wells took some of the gas, and his friend pulled out one of Well‘s teeth. Wells felt no pain at all. As he didn‘t know enough about laughing gas, he gave a man less gas than he should have. The man cried out with pain when his tooth was being pulled out.

Wells tried again, but this time he gave too much of the gas, and the man died. Wells never forgot this terrible event.

At 2:30 on December 5, 1945, five US Navy (海军) training planes took off in clear weather from the base Lauderdale, Florida. The planes flew east over the coast--- and disappeared. The group was Flight 19, on a run between Florida and Bahamas. Taylor was the group leader. At about 3:40, Taylor reported that his compasses(指南针) were not reading properly. The other planes followed their leader aimlessly, firs east, then west, then northeast over the ocean, as Taylor tried to make sure of the direction by radio. Then, suddenly Taylor was heard to give orders to dive.

Quickly, two giant (very large) Martin seaplanes were sent up to search for Flight 19. Several hours later, the wind became strong and visibility(能见度)dropped. A return to base was ordered. But only one of the Martin seaplanes landed. Four days later, the Navy and Coast(海岸部队)combed a 100,000 square-mile area with more than 100 planes and ships. No sign was ever shown of the missing planes. Today, people have noted the disappearance of many ships and planes in the southwest part of the North Atlantic and began to call this area the Bermuda Triangle(百慕大三角).

The points of the triangle are Bermuda, Puerto Rico(波多黎各) and a spot in the Gulf of Mexico(墨西哥湾), west of Florida. It is a two – faced water world of tiny island, bright beaches and beautiful waters. Yet thick fogs, powerful currents(急流)and sudden storms are hidden behind this smiling surface.

Quite a few people believe that the phases of the moon(月相)affect the behavior of human and other creatures. That is known as the lunar effect(月相效应). The lunar effect has been around for many centuries. The power of the moon is often used to explain a wide range of events, such as human insanity(精神错乱), and increases in violent crimes(暴力犯罪) and traffic accidents. According to some traditions, for example, before the coming of modern techniques, surgeons(外科医生) would refuse to operate on the full moon nights because of the increased risk of death of the patient through blood loss. The idea behind the lunar effect ahs even found its way into the news. For example, it has been said that the full moon may have influenced voters‘(选民)behavior in the 2000 U.S. presidential election(总统大选). Does the moon affect our behavior at all? Some people say it does. They say the moon causes the tides, so surely that the moon has an effect on people and we ourselves are full of the water, too. But scientists point out that the moon only affects unrestrained(不受控制的) waters, such as oceans. The water in our bodies isn‘t even comparable(可比较). And over fifty years of research has shown nothing to prove the existence(存在) of a causative(引起联系的) link between the moon and areas such as mental illness, birth rates, crime, or accidents.

There is an explanation for why people link the full moon to unusual human behavior. The reason is that people have selective memories(选择性记忆). When something unusual happens and there is a full moon, people might notice the moon and think it is to be blamed. 99. What do quite a few people believe?

100. What is used to explain wide range of events?

It‘s 2021. You feel sick, so you go to the doctor. She checks your fever, looks at your throat, and asks what you‘re thinking these days. When you leave, she gives you some medicine, but also a list of thinking skills that you are supposed to practice daily. She says that the way you think is causing some of your illness.

Doctors and other scientists who study the human mind and try to explain why people believe in the way that they do, called psychologists, are starting to believe it. You know that your brain is connected to every part of your body through your nervous system (神经系统). Now scientists have proved that how you think and feel have an influence on the health of your body.

Stress (压力,紧张) is caused whenever there is a problem or a change in your life. Of course, everybody has stress more or less; nobody‘s life is perfect. In fact, stress is necessary. Without stress, we would never learn anything or grow or change. We would probably be bored to death. But too much stress can hurt you. It can weaken your body‘s protection so that you are more likely to catch diseases. It can even make you more likely to have an accident.

When you feel stress, your brain sends a message to your body to produce a chemical called adrenaline (肾上腺素). Adrenaline speeds up your breathing and your heart beat. Today you have a different kind of stress. Problems like endless homework or troubles with your family are the kind of things you can‘t fight or run away from, so you don‘t use up all that adrenaline. It just stays inside you. And that‘s what can do something bad to you.

What can you do about stress? First, you can try to find ways to change things so you aren‘t under so much stress. You can make a plan to finish homework or go to a doctor or a psychologist to try to work things out with your family or your friends. But sometimes you can‘t change a stressful situation. Sometimes you don‘t even want to. A big change might be a good change, but it will still be stressful. 78. According to the passage, when you leave the hospital, the doctor gives you some medicine and _______ as well.

A. checks your fever B. looks at your throat

C. tells you the reasons of your illness D. advises you to practice thinking skills

C. Because your nervous system is the most important.

D. Because the way you think has connection with the health of your body. 80. Which of the following is TRUE according the passage? A. You shouldn‘t go to the gym if you are under stress. B. One can do his homework to burn up adrenaline. C. Diseases and accidents are caused by stress.

D. Stress can sometimes be helpful.

81. A chemical called adrenaline can speed up ________. A. your breathing and heart beat B. your blood running C. your brain thinking D. your body relaxing

82. Which of the following can NOT reduce stress according to the passage? A. Making a plan about your homework. B. Asking a psychologist for help. C. Going to your family or friends for help. D. Eating some sweet food.

83. From the last sentence of this passage, we can know that ________. A. it‘s difficult to change a stressful situation B. it‘s not stressful when a good change take place C. a big change can also cause another stressful situation D. a stressful situation can‘t be changed without any effort 84. A long time ago, Milton S. Hershey, the creator of the popular chocolate bars, was dipped in (浸入) warm chocolate. I know all about it. My grandfather was there!

At nineteen, Hershey opened a candy business in Philadelphia (费城). Although it failed, he tried again in several other cities and succeeded with Crystal A Caramels. But Hershey was not satisfied with it. He did

some experiments with chocolate and managed to sell his first chocolate bars in 1900. They were a great success. Three years later, Hershey built a factory to sell his chocolate bars.

Hershey was usually pleasant, kind and enjoyed a good joke. However, in his chocolate factory, he was serious with the workers. He was both respected and feared. His anger would burst out when things didn‘t go as he‘d expected, and workers would be fired (解雇) for mistakes.

My grandfather began working in the factory as a young man. His job was to push the vats (大桶) of warm chocolate to a storage area. To do this, he had to push the heavy vats up a ramp (斜坡) and across the walkway. One day, Hershey was taking a walk while my grandfather was pushing a vat of chocolate up the ramp. Suddenly, Hershey fell into the vat. Everyone else held their breath and ran up to pull him out. Grandfather was very frightened. Was he going to lose his job?

However, Hershey wasn‘t angry. He said something in a low voice. Then he smiled. ―It‘s not your fault, son,‖ he said. ―I need to watch where I‘m going.‖ He put some chocolate in his mouth. ―Mmm, that‘s good,‖ he said. Everyone laughed. Hershey kept walking with the dripping chocolate. And Grandfather kept his job.

Now when you enjoy the taste of ―Kisses‖ chocolate, do you think about the funny story of Mr. Hershey—my grandfather‘s father?
