To most of us, school means classes, teachers, schedules, grades and tests. But for the children at Sudbury Valley School in Massachusetts, school is very different.

Firstly, there are no lessons. All the children, aged between 4 and 19, do whatever they want. There are no teachers, only “staff members”. The idea behind this is that you do not need to makechildren learn, because children want to learn anyway. “You do not need to say to a three-year-old, „Go explore your environment.‟ You can‟t stop them!” says Daniel Greenberg, a founder of the school. “But if you make children do what you want all day… they will lose all taste of learning.” At Sudbury Valley School, you will find children talking, reading, painting,

cooking, working on computers, studying French, playing the piano, climbing trees, or just running around. Two boys spent three years just fishing!

The other way that Sudbury Valley School is different is that the children can decide the rules. Every week, there is a school meeting where both children and staff have one vote each—even the four-year-olds. They decide the school rules, how to spend the school budget (预算,经费), and even which staff they want and do not want anymore.

When the school first opened in 1968, people said it would never work. But today, the school has 200 students, and 80% of its students go on to college. Even the two boys who went fishing all the time have successful careers today. One of them is a musician and the other is a computer scientist.

56. What is the main idea of the article?

A.An unusual school. B.Children‟s hobbies. C.A school without teachers D.Education in the US. 57. What does the school believe?

B.Children learn best when they do what they want to do. C.Learning is for adults—children should only play. D.Children should only learn about one thing at a time. 58. What does Daniel Greenberg say about three-year-olds? A.They love learning. B.They are very naughty.

C.They want to be outside all the time. D.They are too young to learn anything. 59. Who has the most power in the school meeting?

A.The older children have more power than the younger children. B.A child has more power than an adult.

C.The younger children have more power than the older children. D.Everybody has equal power.

An experiment was once done by Karl von Frisch, in which he studied bee activities when they returned to their home called a hive (蜂窝). The experiment showed that there was a means by which a bee communicated to other bees that it had found food. That was dance!

In fact, bees do two kinds of dances to tell other bees of their food discovery. First, there is a circle dance, in which the bee moves in a circle inside the hive. The circle dance is used when the food is not more then ten metres away. A second kind of dance done by the bee is a waggling(摇摆) dance. That is to say, the bee wiggles the end of its body as it moves in a straight line, then it turns in a semicircle (半圆), runs straight again. The waggling dance is used when the food is more than ten metres away. Meanwhile, in the two dances, the bees smell the dancing bee that has found the food. The smell tells them where to find the flower and also what kind of flower to look for.

For this really interesting work, Karl won a Nobel Prize. 60 Karl von Frisch won a Nobel Prize for _____________.

A.communicating with bees B.having studied bees‟ activities

C.setting up an experimental base D.the discovery of bees‟ looking for food 61. If the food is ______ away, the bee will move in a circle. A.16 metres B.20 metres C.8 metres D.30 metres

Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging emotion, unless you learn how to deal with it. They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer.

Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time. Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Others burst with anger, and scream and yell(叫喊,呼喊). But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it. This is called repressing (抑制,压抑)anger.

For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person's health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases the same hormones (荷尔蒙;激素).They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etc.In general the person feels excited and ready to act.

Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep their anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure. Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger. They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, “Do not express your anger while angry. Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably.”

Doctors say that a good way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry. They said that laughter is much healthier than anger. 64. “Damaging emotion” means that _________. A.the emotion is harmless B.the feeling is hard C.the feeling is very strong D.the emotion is harmful 65. What statement is WRONG? A.Anger is a normal emotion.

B.Heart disease can be caused by anger. C.Once you are angry, you must be cancered (得癌症). D.Anger may cause you high blood pressure.

66. Repressing anger _________ expressing it violently, according to some scientists. A.is more harmful than B.is just the same as C.is much better than D.is less harmful than 67. According to the author, you'd better _________. A.never be angry B.cool anger down before you express it C.laugh at yourself when you get angry D.admit you are wrong when you are angry

In a great many cities, hundreds of people ride bicycles to work everyday. In New City, some bike riders have even formed a group called Bike for a Better City. They declare that if more people rode bicycles to work, there would be fewer automobiles(汽车) in the downtown part of the city and so less dirty air from car engines. For several years this group has been trying to get the city government to help bicycle riders. For example. They want the city to draw special lanes(通道) for bicycles only on some of the main streets, because when bicycle riders must use the same lanes as cars, there are accidents. Bike for a Better city feels that if there were special lanes more people would use bikes.

But no bicycles lanes have been drawn. Not everyone thinks they are a good idea-----they

say it will slow traffic. Some store owners on the main streets don't like the idea------they say that if there is less traffic, they will have less business.

The city government has not yet decided what to do. It wants to keep everyone happy. On

weekends, Central Park----the largest place of open ground in New York----is closed to cars, and the roads may be used by bicycles only. But Bike for a Better City says that this is not enough and keeps fighting to get bicycle lanes downtown. 73. The bike riders suggest that _____________.
