My boyfriend and I had been dating for almost a year and both felt the time was right to join our lives together.

The month of January was spent planning our perfect summer wedding. My mother and I went to the closest town to buy a gown that would play the leading role on my special occasion. But after a day’s shopping, there was still no sign of the dress of my dreams. Before we gave up, we entered a little shop at the corner. The clerk showed us several beautiful gowns in my size, but none were right. Finally, she announced she had one more dress in the back that was expensive and not even my size, but perhaps I might want to look at it anyway. When she brought it out, I screamed in delight.

This was it!

Even though it was at least two sizes larger and more costly than I had expected, I talked Mom into buying it. I was sure I would be able to get it tailored in my hometown.

A friend gave me the number of a lady named Maggie across town who

worked at home doing alterations. When I arrived at her house, she carefully inspected my dress and asked me to try it on. She put a handful of pins into the shoulders and sides of my gown and told me to pick it up in two days.

Thank goodness! The dress now fit as if it had been made especially for me.

But on Valentine’s Day, my boyfriend called.

“Sandy, I’ve come to the decision that I’m not ready to get married,” he announced, none too gently. “I want to travel and experience life for a few years before settling down.”

He apologized for the inconvenience of leaving all the wedding cancellations to me and then quickly left town.

My world turned upside down. I was angry and heartbroken and had no idea how to recover. But days flew into weeks and weeks blended into months. I survived.

Karen, Judy and I were the last ones back in the school room after lunch. All of the other students were already outside, since it was a pleasant spring day.

“Look what I found this morning in the storage cupboard when I was getting out some art supplies for Mrs. Eiffler.” With a wicked smile on her face, Karen held up a wooden box filled with short pieces of chalk in every color of the rainbow.

“Wow! What fun it would be to write on the blackboard while everyone is outside!” Judy’s eyes twinkled with expectation.

“But Mrs. Eiffler doesn’t want us writing on the blackboard,” I responded, already feeling guilty, although we had not yet done a thing.

“Don’t be such a coward, Janet. No one will ever know,” said Karen, reaching into the box and drawing out a piece of chalk.

I reluctantly joined my friends in the artwork, wanting to be part of what was going on, but afraid of being caught. I knew well that we were breaking not one, but two class rules. The second rule was that no one was allowed to stay inside at noon without a written excuse from home if the weather was nice.

Trying various colors, we drew houses, trees and three-dimensional boxes. It was fun!

Then Judy had an idea. “We’re all right-handed. Let’s see who can write

her name best using her left hand.”

Judy and Karen picked up their chalk and started writing. I chose a white piece from the box and wrote my name. The handwriting was a bit shaky, but no one would doubt that it said “Janet”.

“I think Judy is the winner,” said Karen. “Hers is the best.”

“We’d better get this board cleaned off before Mrs. Eiffler comes back,” said Judy, eyeing the clock. She picked up an eraser and began erasing our handiwork from the board.

They met with each other at a party. She was so young and beautiful, while he was just an ordinary man. At the end of the party, he invited her to have coffee with him, which was to her great surprise, however, out of politeness, she accepted his invitation.

Sitting in a nice cafe and not knowing what to talk about, they both felt very embarrassed. When the waitress served them the coffee, he asked her to bring him some salt. Astonished by his strange action, her curiosity aroused, she asked,

“How come such a habit?” He hesitated for a while before replying in a word-after-word way, “When I was a little kid, we lived by the seashore and I used to indulge myself in the sea. Every time there came the ocean wave, the sea water would found its way into my mouth, which was bitter and salty. I have been away from my family for a long time and I am missing it, and coffee with salt can remind me of the taste of the seawater and bring me closer to my hometown.” All of a sudden, she was touched by the man. In her eyes, a man with homesickness must be a domestic man, who will surely love his family.

After that special night, they dated frequently. She gradually got to know that he was a nice man, being tolerant, attentive and considerate. Deep down, she felt lucky for accepting his first invitation out of politeness, otherwise, she would have missed such a remarkable man. They later dated with each other in almost all the cafes in the city, where she would always take the lead to tell the waiter to get him some salt.

As all the fairy tales go, the princess and the prince get married and lead a happy life ever since. And the story would have ended with the husband passing away after 40 years of happy life, nothing special if it were not for the letter the husband left for her before his death.

Who did I meet? What did we talk about? What was Maggie’s feeling when she learned that my wedding had been canceled? What was her suggestions? What was my attitude to her suggestions? What about my wedding the next summer? What kind of person was Tim? What were my comments on Tim? What was my opinion about my marriage?

One day, while standing in line at the supermarket, I heard someone calling

my name. It was Maggie, who once helped me to do alterations for my wedding gown. She politely inquired about my summer wedding. When she learned that my wedding had been called off, she was very shocked, but agreed it was probably for the best. I thanked her for adjusting my wedding gown. With a sparkle in her eye, she began telling me about her single son, Tim. Even though I wasn’t interested in dating again, she finally talked me into meeting Tim. I did have my summer wedding, with Maggie’s son, only a year later. And I

did get to wear the dress of my dreams down the aisle on the arm of Tim on my special occasion. It was obvious that without the special gown, I would never have met Tim, my real “Mister Right”. Till now, Tim and I have shared eighteen years of our happy life together, with our three children.

Eiffler never asked about the abrasion and maybe never noticed it.”

Why couldn’t Janet’s name be erased? Did it finally come off? How did they achieve it? How did they feel in the process? Did Mrs. Eiffler find out the truth? How did Janet feel after escaping punishment? What did Janet learn from this experience?

Everything came off... But my name! I carefully looked at the white chalk I used

and found it wasn’t chalk at all, but a white crayon! My stomach churned (剧烈搅动) and my knees felt weak. What would Mrs. Eiffler do to me? Hurriedly, we tried many ways. Finally my name came off all right, but in the process of removing it, we left an abrasion (磨损)on the blackboard. We were just slipping into our desks as the bell rang and the other students began entering the room. The teacher walked in soon afterward.

Mrs. Eiffler never asked about the abrasion and maybe never noticed it. But I did. Every time I walked past the marred surface of the blackboard, I remembered.

Oh, how I remembered. The lesson I learned that day is one I never forgot, even though over forty years have passed since the event. “No one will ever know” is never true. Even if no one else found out, I myself knew. Sometimes living with a guilty conscience is punishment enough.

Eiffler never asked about the abrasion and maybe never noticed it. But I did.”

范文中我们用“never, every time, even if, even though”来体现时间上的逻辑关系,同时也表达了良心的谴责令Janet终生难忘。

根据文本结尾处“nothing special if it were not for the letter the husband left for her before his death”以及该段第一句“please forgive me for my cheating you all the time”可知,信中的内容可能与他们完美幸福的生活形成一定反差。

What did he want to say in the letter? What happened in the cafe? What did he cheat her of? Why did he do so? Why didn’t he tell his wife earlier? How did she feel? Would she forgive her husband? If so, why? If not, why not?

“My dearest, please forgive me for my cheating you all the time. Do you still remember our first date in the cafe? The atmosphere was embarrassed and I was feeling nervous. I meant to ask the waitress to bring me the sugar, which came out to be the salt. But I had to go on with the mistake, which sparked your curiosity. I had no other choice but to make up the story I told you, which made me drink coffee with salt for the rest of my life. You never know how bitter it is! I didn’t dare to tell you the truth because I was afraid of you leaving me for that. Thanks for bringing me the happy life. If I had a second life, I would choose you to be my wife again.”

She was shocked by the letter, with the feeling of being cheated. However, he

would never know how strong her desire was to let him know that, she was just too happy to be cheated for her whole life by someone she loved so much.

文本结尾处铺垫了“nothing special if it were not for the letter the husband left for her before his death”以及续写第一段第一句“please forgive me for my cheating you all the time”可知,信中的内容可能与他们完美幸福的生活形成一定反差。
