阅读下列短文,从题后所给的A、B、C、和D项中选出最佳选项。

A

(2014年广州一模)Life is a series of choices, and we cannot always foresee the consequences.

Harry Saleem,a very fat man with too much money and power, faced a choice.Outside his office waited his personal doctor, bringing him vital news about the only medicine that could save his life.On the other side of the world, one of his engineers waited for his decision on an important matter of business.

His secretary asked whether she could bring the doctor in.The billionaire businessman made his decision.

“No,let the fool wait,” growled Saleem.“Business comes first.” Despite the health problems caused by his huge weight,he was_still_obsessed_with making money. He raised a fat finger, and one of his staff hurried to switch on a large television set.

The screen flashed to life, and Saleem's engineer appeared. The man talked by satellite directly to his master although they were thousands of miles apart.“It's all ready to blow,Mr.Saleem,” he said.“Just say the word.”

His engineer was standing above Pakan Valley in South America.A few months ago,it had been a rainforest. Then Saleem's men had come, cutting down all the valuable trees and forcing the villagers to move out.Across the bottom of the valley,a dam had been built. This would provide power for the factories which Saleem planned to build in the area. The factories would bring him vast profits.

He ordered the engineer to press the button. The camera moved across the valley, and then a cloud of dust rose up,followed shortly by a dull explosion.A mighty river changed its course, and water flooded into the doomed Pakan Valley.

“Good, that's that.Turn it off.Now get that doctor in here,” he commanded.

The doctor came in with a worried look and started to examine his wealthy patient.“You're doing very well,Mr. Saleem,” he said finally,“The new medicine is saving your life. The only difficulty is getting more of it.”

“Can you get more? Money is no problem,” Saleem said.“Tell me what you need, and we'll get it.”

“The main ingredient of this medicine came from a newlydiscovered plant—a small, green orchid,” the doctor explained.“We'll need many of them to make enough medicine. They are very rare. There's only one place in the world where they grow.”

“where?” demanded the businessman,impatiently.

The doctor smiled.“Well, luckily the orchids come from some land you own. They're from a place in South America known as Pakan Valley.”

“Sooner or later,we will have to recognize that the Earth also has rights to live without pollution. What we must know is that human beings cannot live without the Earth, but the planet can live without humans.”

— Evo Morales

I am not one for telling people what to do;I basically believe that as Americans,we have a right to our own opinions on social issues. Now,with that being said,I must stress one issue that seems to be a growing trend: pick up your trash (垃圾).

I love the fact that parents involve their children in outdoor activities. In fact,I encourage outdoor activities for children.I think that being outdoors away from technological devices fuels the imagination;that is to say,it provides materials for children's writing and creation.I really do love seeing a family sitting along a river bridge and enjoying some summertime fishing as well as exploring. But what I do not like is going back to the same area the next day and finding the place littered with trash.

If you are teaching your children about outdoor activities, such as fishing, teach them to respect nature as well. When packing your supplies for the day's outing, pack a small kitchen bag in with the rest of the items.Throw your papers, cans, wrappers, containers and everything else that are not at the site upon arrival in the kitchen bag.Remember to take the kitchen bag with you.Don't misuse your responsibility and model.

I am the first one to admit that I am not perfect when it comes to the whole reduce, reuse, recycle program. From my desk right now,I can see a pile of old magazines that need to be taken to the recycling center. But I would never leave trash along the roadside or other public areas.

I would like to see future generations enjoy the outdoors without all the pollutants left behind today. For now,I would just like to take my wildlife photos without litter in the background.Pick up your trash.

6.What is implied in Evo Morales'words in Paragraph 1?

A.Human beings should change their attitude towards the Earth. B.Human beings will be refused by the Earth someday in the future. C.Human beings have realized the importance of caring about the Earth. D.Human beings only know they have rights to ask for more from the Earth.

解析:推理判断题。从第一段的“Sooner or later,we will have to recognize that the Earth also has rights to live without pollution”和“the planet can live without humans”可知,人类应该改变对地球的态度了。

答案:A

7.The underlined word “fuels” in Paragraph 3 can probably be replaced by “________”.

A.disturbs B.squeezes C.motivates D.controls

解析:意义猜测题。根据该词后面的“that is to say,it provides materials for children's writing and creation”可知,该词意为“得到燃料,加燃料”,结合语境,该词跟C项意义接近。

答案:C

8.In the passage, the author seems to agree that ______.

A.some dangerous activities like fishing should be far away from children B.it is our responsibility to care for environment in outdoor activities C.there is no need for parents to take a kitchen bag in outdoor activities D.future generations don't have a good environmental consciousness

解析:推理判断题。从第四段的“If you are teaching your children ...teach them to respect nature as well...Don't misuse your responsibility and model”可知,作者认为在与孩子进行户外活动时,父母应教育孩子爱护环境。

A.He isn't accustomed to using the kitchen bag. B.He would never pick up trash along the roadside. C.He always throws the old magazines to the dustbin. D.He doesn't take his old magazines to a recycling center.

解析:事实细节题。从倒数第二段的“From my desk right now,I can see a pile of old magazines that need to be taken to the recycling center.”可知答案。

答案:D

10.What is the purpose of this passage?

On Monday, the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) turned down the request of the Georgia Aquarium (水族馆) to import 18 whales that were captured off the coast of Russia. The Georgia Aquarium, located in Atlanta,Georgia,is the world's largest aquarium. It is already home to four white whales. In 2012,the aquarium requested 18 more whales to help people learn more about the species and improve breeding efforts.

A law says that white whales can only be brought into the US and put on display if there is an educational reason for doing so,they are captured without being hurt, and their capture doesn't harm the local population of whales.Under this law,NOAA denied the aquarium's request.“The Georgia Aquarium scientists and animal care professionals have worked so hard to help ensure the sustainability (持续性) of white whales in human care at our facility and others in North America. You can imagine how they feel hearing the news,” the aquarium said in a statement, upon receiving the news that their request had been turned down.

In a letter to the aquarium,NOAA said that the idea did not meet guidelines under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.In order to receive permission, the aquarium had to prove that the import would not harm the population of white whales living near Russia.NOAA said that the live capture of the whales had led to the population's significant decline.

White whales are smart, social animals.“White whales are very important to our polar oceans,” Michael Payne, who works for NOAA,said.“They're a key member of the whale family in those waters.”

More than 210 white whales currently live in aquariums and zoos around the world. Many people believe that keeping white whales in aquariums will help aquarium visitors learn about the species and will help scientists protect it.But many people and animal rights groups believe white whales should stay in the ocean to survive.Critics of keeping white whales in aquariums say that the whales are being used for entertainment, instead of for their survival. These groups are celebrating NOAA' s decision.

11.How do the Georgia Aquarium scientists most probably feel hearing the news? A.Excited. B.Moved. C.Relieved. D.Disappointed.

解析:推理判断题。根据第二段的“The Georgia Aquarium scientists and animal care professionals have worked so hard to help ensure the sustainability of white whales in human care at our facility and others in North America. You can imagine how they

feel hearing the news”可推断水族馆里的这些科学家听到消息后很失望。

C.the population of whales near Russia could be harmed D.the white whales are not used for an educational purpose

For those who make journeys across the world, the speed of travel today has turned the countries into series of villages.Distances between them appear no greater to a modern traveller than those which once faced men as they walked from village to village.Jet planes fly people from one end of the earth to the other, allowing them a freedom of movement undreamt of a hundred years ago.

Yet some people wonder if the revolution in travel has gone too far.A price has been paid, they say,for the conquest (征服)of time and distance.Travel_is_something_to_be_enjoyed,not_endured(忍受).The boat offers leisure and time enough to appreciate the everchanging sights and sounds of a journey.A journey by train also has a special charm about it.Lakes and forests and wild, open plains sweeping past your carriage window create a grand view in which time and distance mean nothing. On board a plane, however, there is just the blank blue of the sky filling the narrow windows of the airplane. The soft lighting,in

flight films and gentle music make up the only world you know, and the hours progress slowly.

Then there is the time spent being “processed” at a modern airport.People are conveyed like robots along walkways;baggage is weighed, tickets produced, examined and produced yet again before the passengers move to another waiting area.Journeys by rail and sea take longer, yes, but the hours devoted to being “processed” at departure and arrival in airports are luckily absent. No wonder, then, that the modern highspeed trains are winning back passengers from the airlines.

Man,however,is now a world traveler and cannot turn his back on the airplane. The working lives of too many people depend upon it;whole new industries have been built around its design and operation. The holidaymaker, too, with limited time to spend, patiently endures the busy airports and the limited space of the flight to gain those extra hours and even days, relaxing in the sun.Speed controls people's lives;time saved,in work or play,is the important thing—or so we are told.Perhaps those first horsemen, riding free across the wild, open plains, were enjoying a better world than the one we know today. They could travel at will, and the clock was not their master.

16.What does the writer try to express in Paragraph 1? A.Travel by plane has speeded up the growth of villages.

B.The speed of modern travel has made distances relatively short. C.The freedom of movement has helped people realize their dreams. D.Man has been fond of traveling rather than staying in one place.

解析:推理判断题。由第一段中心句“Jet planes fly people from one end of the earth to the other, allowing them a freedom of movement undreamt of a hundred years ago.”可知。

答案:B

17.How does the writer support the underlined statement in Paragraph 2? A.By giving instructions.

B.By analyzing cause and effect. C.By following the order of time. D.By giving examples.

解析:推理判断题。第二段是总分结构,主旨句在段首。本句后面就是对于这个观点的具体解释,用火车、轮船、飞机的例子来说明论点。

答案:D

18.According to Paragraph 3,passengers are turning back to modern highspeed trains because________.

A.they pay less for the tickets B.they feel safer during the travel C.they can enjoy higher speed of travel

D.they don't have to waste time being “processed”

解析:事实细节题。第三段主要介绍乘飞机前的一系列手续,这些被认为是浪费时间的。 答案:D

19.What does the last sentence of the passage mean? A.They could enjoy free and relaxing travel. B.They needed the clock to tell the time. C.They preferred traveling on horseback. D.They could travel with their master.

解析:推理判断题。根据倒数第二句后面的“were enjoying a better world than the one we know today”可知他们比现在的我们更能自由地享受美景。

答案:A

20.What is the main idea of the passage? A.Air travel benefits people and industries.

B.Train travel has some advantages over air travel. C.Great changes have taken place in modern travel. D.The high speed of air travel is gained at a cost.
