There will be more plastic than fish in the world’s oceans by 2050. That is what a new report from the World Economic Forum and Ellen MacArthur Foundation warns. If the current trend continues, the report said, oceans will contain one ton of plastic for every three tons of fish in 2025. By 2050, plastics will weigh more than fish. The problem is that each year at least 8 million tons of plastics end up in oceans around the world. This is the same as dumping the contents of one garbage truck into the ocean every minute.

Not all plastic ends up in the ocean because someone throws a plastic bottle into the water. Plastic containers and other trash thrown onto streets and sidewalks often are swept into oceans. Unlike other types of trash in the ocean, the plastic never bio-degrades. There is a way to slow the amount of plastics going into the oceans — people can recycle more. Currently only about 14 percent of plastics are recycled. Research in Europe shows as much as 53 percent of plastic could be recycled using available technology. The report says that another solution is using less plastic for packaging products. But that is not likely to happen.

“Given plastic packaging’s many benefits, both the possibility and desirability of an across-the-board dramatic reduction in the volume of plastic packaging used is clearly low, ”the report said. But the authors note reducing the use of plastics should be tried“where possible. ”For decades, scientists warned that plastics are killing fish. Research shows that fish are dying from choking after eating plastics. Another cause of death is that plastics cause“intestinal blockage and starvation, ”the environmental group said. 4. Why is the garbage truck mentioned in Paragraph 1 ? A. To explain how plastics end up in the ocean. B. To warn people against the ocean pollution. C. To clarify the seriousness of the problem. D. To point out some details of the report.

5. Why is plastic more dangerous than other types of trash?

A. There is too much of it. B. It poisons the ocean water. C. It is from different sources. D. It is hard to break down.

6. What is the author’s attitude to the suggested solutions?

A. Pessimistic. B. Curious. C. Unconcerned. D. Terrified. 7. What can we infer from the text? A. People are not aware of the problem. B. Recycling is limited by lack of technology. C. Plastic packaging has become part of our life. D. Fish in the ocean will be replaced by plastics.

Recently, I experienced a wonderful lesson in how little things still meana lot. My brother, mother and I live in Hawaii. Our farm is at least a dozen miles from even the most basic of services. Therefore, I take weekly trips to the shop to gel supplies. About a month ago, I finished loading up the car and was about to leave when a piece of paper on the ground caught my eye. I picked it up and read it carefully.Immediately, I was grateful that I had done that___4___

It was a receipt (收据) from the State Motor Vehicle Division, recording the owner's payment of her Vehicle's Registration fees. I put myself in his or her shoes and thought: no one would throw this away. I looked over the receipt for any personal data, perhaps a license plate (车牌) or telephone number, but failed. How could I find the owner in the busy, crowded parking lot? Had it been lying there for a few minutes or a week? So I checked the date, the fees paid and the name of the owner, who must live in our town. I decided that the best and easiest step to take was to put the receipt in an envelope and send it to the owner first the next morning.

By the end of the week, I received a beautiful “thank you” letter from a woman including a handwritten message and a card. In the letter, the woman explained how the wind took her receipt from a pocket in her car's passenger door. She had searched everywhere for quite some time before giving up.

It felt great to know I had helped someone avoid a loss by doing something that seemed little and unimportant.

8. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 1 mean? A. He was lucky to learn the lesson.

B. It was a good idea to do shopping that day. C. He was right to pick up the paper.

D. It turned out the paper belonged to the writer. 9. What information did the writer get from the paper?

A The woman's license plate number. B. The woman's phone number. C. The woman's name. D. The woman's address.

10. How did the woman lose the receipt?

A. She forgot where she had put it. B. A strong wind blew it away. C. It fell onto the floor. D. She left it in the parking lot. 11. What can be the best title for the text?

A. A Lesson I Will Never Forget B. Never Lose Heart or Give up C. Little Things Still Mean a Lot D. Think Carefully Before You Act

D

A Singaporean company will feed airport food waste to mealworms before turning them into fish feed, aiming to cut the country's use of imported feed and offer a continuous alternative.

Blue Aqua Internationalwill partner with Dnata, an air and travel services provider, to change organic waste at Singapore's Changi Airport into insect protein for aquacultural use, according to a statement Tuesday.

The project looks to replace traditional fish and soybean meal as the main sources of protein for aquafeed. The insects will eat the food waste and change it into part of the body containing about 60 per cent protein. The dried baby worms will then be made into feed.

These mealworms can be a continuous solution to several problems. Using a small land and giving out less carbon, they turn food waste into feed and offer an alternative source of protein. Ynsect SAS, a small French business that keeps mealworms to feed fish and pets, attracted money from investors includingIron Manmovie actor Robert Downey Jr. in a round of fund-raising last year.

The deal will give Singapore's farmers access to domestically produced animal feed, which is traditionally bought from abroad. The Southeast Asian nation imports more than 90 percent of its food and has set a goal to produce a third of its food locally by 2030. It also aims to achieve a general recycling rate of 70 per cent by then. Presently, less than 20 per cent of Singapore's food waste is recycled.

As part of the partnership, Dubai-based Dnata will add Blue Aqua to its list of suppliers to buy locally farmed seafood for its catering service. 12. What is the function of mealworms?

A. To cut the use of imported fish feed. B. To eat food waste and make fish feed.

C. To domestically produce animal feed. D. To replace traditional fish and soybean meal. 13. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?

A. The producers of the feed. B. The purpose of the project C. The advantages of the project. D. The composition of the feed. 14. What can we infer about Singapore from Paragraph 5?

A. It is a rich country. B. It is short of self-produced food.

C. Its recycling rate is very high now. D. Its farmers don't support the deal. 15. What is the text mainly about?

A. A new way to produce fish feed. B.An introduction to a company. C. A plan to reduce food waste. D. A deal to protect farmers. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
