If you ask people “ How did you learn English so well?” you may get a surprising answer, “In my sleep!”

These are people who have taken part in one of the recent experiments to test learn-while-you-sleep methods, which are now being tried in several countries, and with several subjects, of which English is only one.

Specialists say this sleep-study method speeds language learning tremendously.

They say that the average person can learn two or three times as much during sleep as in the same period during the day and this does not affect his rest in any way. A word of warning, however, sleep-teaching will only hammer into your head what you have studied already while you are awake.

In one experiment, ten lessons were broadcast over the radio at intervals of a fortnight. Each lesson lasted twelve hours---from 8p.m. to 8a.m. The first three hours of English grammar and vocabulary were given with the students awake. At11p.m. a soothing lullaby was broadcast to send the student to sleep and for the next three hours the radio whispered the lesson again into his sleeping ears. At 2a.m. , a sharp noise was sent over the radio to wake the sleeping student up for a few minutes of revision. Then he was lulled back to rest again while the radio purred on. At 5 o’clock his sleep ended and he had to go through the lesson again for three hours before his hard-earned breakfast.

46.. Compared with other methods of learning, the learn-while-you-sleep method is A.slower B.quicker C.very easy D.very tiring 47.During sleep-teaching you can .

A.learn grammar and vocabulary you have never heard about before B.learn how to sleep better C.learn how to sleep less

D.listen to lessons again to know them better 48.Sleep-teaching means listening to . A.a soothing lullaby B.a sharp noise C.the whispered lesson D.a hammer

49. What was the total number of hours, asleep or awake, which students spent learning English during the experiment?

A.30 B.120 C.140 D.400 50. The experiment took_________.

A. two weeks B. forty nights C. twenty weeks D. one month

B

Every year more and more plants and animals disappear never to be seen again. Strangely, it is the most intelligent but most thoughtless animal that is causing most of the problems----man. Nature is very carefully balanced and if this balance is disturbed, animals can disappear alarmingly fast. Every day, thousands of species of animals draw closer to extinction. There are countless numbers of species which may become extinct before they are even discovered.

In many lakes the fish are dying. Fishermen are worried because every year there are fewer fish and some lakes have no fish at all. Scientists are beginning to get worried too. What is killing the fish?

The problem is acid rain. Acid rain is a kind of air pollution. It is caused by factories that burn coal or oil or gas. These factories send smoke high into the air .The wind often carries the smoke far from the factories. Some of the harmful substances in the smoke may come down with the rain hundreds of miles away.

The rain in many places isn’t natural and clean any more. It’s full of acid chemicals. When it falls in lakes, it changes them too. The lakes become more acidic. Acid water is like vinegar or lemon juice. It hurts when it gets in your eyes. It also kills the plants and animals that usually live in lake water. That is why the fish is dying in lakes.

But the dead fish may be just beginning of the problem. Scientists are finding other effects of acid rain. In some large areas trees are dying. Not just one tree here and there, but whole forests. At first scientists couldn’t understand why. There were no bugs or diseases in these trees. The weather was not dry. But now they think that the rain was the cause. Acid rain is making the earth more acidic in theses areas. Some kinds of trees can not live in the soil that is very acidic.

Now scientists are also beginning to study the effects of acid rain on large animals. For example, they believe that some deer in Poland are less healthy because of acid rain. If deer are hurt by the rain, what about people? This is the question many people are beginning to ask. No one knows the answer yet. But it is an important question for us all.

51. Acid rain is caused by_______.

A. natural gas B. the ozone (臭氧) layer depletion (损耗) C. acid lake water D. emissions of industrial enterprises 52. Which of the following is true?

A. Dead fish in lakes is thehttp://www.jkzyw.com/ only problem caused by acid rain B. Scientists are sure that acid rain is not harmful for mankind

C. If we don’t make an attempt to stop acid rain we may never see some animals again D. There’s no reason to worry about several trees that died of some unknown diseases 53. What is not mentioned in the text?

A. Acid rain is capable of dissolving some rocks and stones. B. Fish are unable to live in the water containing acidic chemicals C. Coal, oil or gas form dangerous combinations after being burnt

D. Scientists think that if some larger animals can be affected by acid rain, people may be in great danger.

54. Scientists think acid rain__________.

A. is killing people B. helps kill bugs C. fertilizes the soil D. is killing trees 55. The word bug in this context means________. A. an infectious disease B. a small insect C. a dangerous bird D. a small plant

C

Every human being has a unique arrangement of the skin on his fingers and this arrangement is unchangeable. Scientists and experts have proved the uniqueness of finger prints and discovered that no exactly similar pattern is passed on from parents to children, though nobody knows why this is the case.

The ridge structure on a person’s fingers does not change with growth and is not affected by surface injuries. Burns, cuts and other damage to the outer part of the skin will be replaced in time by new one, which bears a reproduction of the original pattern , It is only when the inner skin is injured that the arrangement will be destroyed. Some criminals make use of this fact to remove their own finger-prints but this is a dangerous and rare step to take.

Finger- prints can be made very easily with printer’s ink. They can be recorded easily. With special methods, identification can be achieved successfully within a short time. Because of the simplicity and economy of this system, finger-prints have often been used as a method of solving criminal cases. A suspected man may deny a charge but this may be in vain. His finger-prints can prove who he is even if his appearance has been changed by age or accident.

When a suspect leaves finger-prints behind at the scene of a crime, they are difficult to detect with the naked eyes. Special techniques are used to “develop” them. Some of the marks found are incomplete but identification is possible if a print of a quarter of an inch square can be obtained.

56. Scientists and experts have proved that the pattern of a human being’s finger skin_________.

A. is similar to his mother’s B. is valuable to himself only C. is like that of others with the same type of blood D. is different from that of all others

57. If your fingers are wounded by knife, fire or other means, the structure of skin will________.

A. be changed partly B. be replaced by a different one C. be the same when the wound is recovered D. become ugly 58. Some criminals remove their own finger-prints by________. A. using printer’s ink B. injuring the inner skin C. damaging the outer skin D. damaging the color

59. Finger-prints have often been used as a method of solving criminal cases because it________.

A. in complicated but reliable B. is simple and not expensive C. is expensive but easy to do D. can bring a lot of money 60. What does the underlined word “naked” mean in the last paragraph? A. easy to destroy B. near-sighted C. bare D. far-sighted

第二节 阅读下面短文,回答文章后面的5个问题。

Let children learn to judge their own work. A child learning to talk does not learn by being corrected all the time; if corrected too much, he will stop talking. He notices a thousand times a day the differences between the language he uses and the language those around him use. Bit by bit, he makes the necessary changes to make his language like other people’s. In the same way, children learn to do all the other things: they learn to do without being taught to walk, run, climb, whistle,

ride a bicycle, compare their own performances with those of more skilled people, and slowly make the needed changes. But in school we never give a child a chance to find out his mistakes and correct them for himself. We do it all for him. We act as if we thought that he would never notice a mistake unless it was pointed out to him, or correct it unless he was made to. Let him work out, with the help of other children if he wants it, what this word says, what the answer is to that problem, whether this is the good way of saying or doing this or not. If it is a matter of right answer, as it may be in mathematics or science, give him the answer book. Let him correct his own papers. Why should we teachers waste time on such routine book? Our job should be to help the child when he tells us that he can’t find the way to get the right answer. Let the children learn what all educated persons must some day learn, how to measure their own understanding, and how to know what they know or do not know.

As everybody can see, China is becoming richer and more powerful, which makes every Chinese proud and happy. At the same time, some difficulties have appeared. As we all know, out country is a developing one and about two-thirds of the population are farmers, so farming and farmers play a very important role. However, farmers have difficulty in increasing their income and grain production has dropped considerably. What’s worse, with the problem of unemployment remaining serious, there is a wide income gap among some members of society.

In my opinion, it is natural for our country to meet with such difficulties. If our government and all the Chinese work together all the difficulties will be solved and our country will have a more wonderful future.
