If someone were to ask me who influenced me most in my life, I’d tell him or her that it’s my brother, Chris. My brother is one of the most 6 people in my life. I may not always act like it, but I look up to him and 7 him. When I think of everything he’s done for me, it’s hard not to 8 him. There are the basic 9 that most older brothers do. You know, they look after you, 10 you with your homework, and let you use their things. But my brother did a lot more for me. He was the one who taught me how to read and how to tie my shoes. He taught me how to hold my 11 underwater. He even taught me how not to touch his things. He also did other big brother stuff (事情). Like shut me in the closet (储藏室), play tricks on me, “forbid (禁止)” me to 12 his things. But for each “mean” thing he did to me, he did about five 13 things. One nice thing he did was that he always let me hang around with him and his friends. Because of that, I have two brothers instead of one. My other “brother” is Chris’s best friend, Corey. They spent a lot of time together when they were younger, and since Chris was nice, I 14 got to do stuff with them. Since Corey was as much my brother as Chris was, of course they both pulled little 15 on me. But I must admit a lot of the tricks 16 because I was a slightly gullible (易受骗的) child. One that 17 comes to mind is when Chris and Corey 18 to make me believe that they were being sucked (吸入) into the ground.

I was so 19 about it that I went inside and told Mum that they were being sucked down. As I said, I was a slightly gullible child. Yes. Boxing is a sport that many people like. Newspapers, magazines and sports programmes on TV often report boxing matches. Professional (职业的) boxers get a lot of attention, and successful boxers are treated as huge heroes.

It seems to me that some people find it interesting. When they watch a boxing match, they imagine what it’s like to win, and this gives them the feeling of being a winner themselves. Sometimes fans cheer for a boxer because the boxer comes from their own country, and if the boxer loses, they often feel as if they have lost a fight themselves. I don’t understand why they like aggressive (富于攻击性的) sports like boxing. Maybe because they feel to be aggressive from time to time, but they cannot show the feeling in their everyday lives. Watching a boxing match gives them an outlet for this feeling.

However, there is a bad side to boxing. It can be a very dangerous sport. Although boxers wear gloves and even helmets during the matches, there are often accidents. Boxers often hurt their heads badly and, sometimes, they are even risking their lives.

As for me, I don’t like aggressive sports like boxing. I think it would be better if less time was given to aggressive sports on TV, and we celebrated more people from non-aggressive sports as heroes. Of course, people like competitive sports, and so do I, but I think that hitting other people is not something that should be regarded as a sport.

24.The writer started the passage by _______.

A.listing facts

B.giving examples

C.asking questions

D.comparing changes

25.What is the main idea of Paragraph 2?

A.Some boxers are regarded as heroes.

B.Boxing can make people be winners.

C.Boxing is popular among some people.D.People have different opinions about boxing.26.Why doesn’t the writer like boxing?

A.The writer doesn’t like competitive sports.B.The writer thinks boxing shouldn’t be a sport.C.The writer thinks boxing is popular and interesting.D.The writer thinks boxing is aggressive and dangerous.

Reading makes men full. Do you like reading novels in your spare time?

Set in the German city of Hamburg, the Story of a Seagull and the Cat Who Taught Her to Fly is about a seagull called Kengah. While diving into the sea for food, she is suddenly hit by the “curse of the sea”—a wave in oil coming from an oil tanker (油轮) in trouble. With great effort, the seagull reaches Hamburg and lands on the balcony of a house. A fat black cat called Zorba lives there. Before dying, Kengah gives her first and last egg to Zorba, asking him to keep three promises: First, that he does not eat the egg; second, that he takes care of it until the chick is born; and finally, and most surprisingly, that Zorba teaches the chick how to fly.

Zorba promises to take care of the baby seagull and keeps his word. He sits on the egg until the chick is born. With the help of his cat friends, he raises the baby seagull with love and protects her from danger. The little seagull is named Fortunata, the “lucky one”. However, the trouble comes when Zorba teaches Fortunata how to fly. Of course, being a cat, it is not easy. After many failed tries, Zorba and his friends turn to a human—a poet. Thanks to their help, Fortunata is finally able to fly and returns to her own world—the sky.

The book is a story about seagulls, flying over the Hamburg sky. It is a story about Zorba and his cat friends, who raise the chick, protect her from danger, and above all, teach her to fly. It is a story about a poet who is able to fly with words.

It is a story about friendship and courage. At the end of the story, when Fortunata takes her first flight, Zorba talks to the poet, “On the brink of the abyss (在悬崖边上), Fortunata understood the most important thing finally.”

Daniella Hudson grew up in a very creative family. “Mum and dad made all our furniture,” she says. “Not because we couldn’t afford it, they just preferred making items to buying them. So visits to city furniture shops nearby just weren’t part of my childhood.” When Daniella visited a design show with her class at the age of ten, she realized she wanted to follow her parents’ example. “There were so many different styles of tables and chairs there,” she says. Since that day, she’s been making furniture. “I’ve learned by giving mum and dad a hand, and through watching videos on the Internet,” she adds.

Her first piece was a table, made soon after visiting the show. It was similar to one she had seen there.

Daniella started selling her furniture at a local market. “I spent most of my free time inside, so this gave me the chance to get some fresh air and find out what people thought about my designs.” Judging by how many items Daniella sold, they thought it was pretty good. “In the end, I had to give up,” says Daniella. “I’d also started an Internet business, which was doing so well. It was taking up every spare minute I had. The market closed down just after that anyway.”

Recently, Daniella was asked to take part in a local design show. “One of the organizers had bought one of my pieces off the Internet. I couldn’t believe it when she told me there would be a thousand visitors,” she says. Instead of worrying about this, Daniella was excited by the chance. “I was amazed she thought my work was good enough,” Daniella says. “I had little idea what visitors would think about it. My furniture is quite different from the designers whose work I’ve seen in magazines—mine is more traditional.” But Daniella received lots of orders at the show and the future is looking bright for this young design star.31.What made Daniella interested in creating furniture?

You may have seen such a photo: with a long white beard (胡子) and wearing a bamboo hat, an old fisherman stands on a boat. Huang Quande looked like this when tourists took photos with him on the Lijiang River in Guilin, Guangxi. He became so famous online that many believed the fisherman on the back of the 20-yuan renminbi banknote (纸币) was based on him. Sadly, Huang passed away at the age of 94 on Feb 18, 2023.

Huang gave up fishing and became a photo model in 2008. He showed the true spirit of Lijiang River—being positive (积极的) and friendly. In his 90s, Huang could still move his boat with speed.

The image of the fisherman on the back of the 20-yuan banknote is not just about one man. Instead, it is a cultural symbol of Guilin landscape (风景), commented Guangming Daily.

In fact, the different backsides of the fifth series of renminbi banknotes show the most iconic (标志性的) landscapes in China. Each of them carries its own cultural value. the back of the 1-yuan banknote are the Three Pools Mirroring the Moon (三潭映月) in West Lake, Zhejiang. It is a great place for moon watchers during Mid-Autumn Festival.

Following the banknotes from 1 yuan to 100, Pan Jinyu from Chongqing had a “banknote tour” when he was 21. “I want to finish a ceremonial (有仪式感的) journey and feel the beauty of our country,” Pan told Chongqing Economic Times.61.When did Huang Quande become a photo model?
