StainlessSteelSpringWire1ThisstandardisissuedunderthefixeddesignationA313/A313M;thenumberimmediatelyfollowingthedesignationindicatestheyearoforiginaladoptionor,inthecaseofrevision,theyearoflastrevision.Anumberinparenthesesindicatestheyearoflastreapproval.Asuperscriptepsilon(e)indicatesaneditorialchangesincethelastrevisionorreapproval.ThisstandardhasbeenapprovedforusebyagenciesoftheDepartmentofDefense.

1.Scope*

1.1Thisspecificationcoversausteniticandage-hardenablestainlesssteelroundspringwireintendedespeciallyforthemanufactureofsprings.

1.2Thevaluesstatedininch-poundunitsorSIunitsaretoberegardedseparatelyasthestandard.Withinthetextandtables,theSIunitsareshowninbrackets.Thevaluesstatedineachsystemarenotexactequivalents;therefore,eachsystemmustbeusedindependentlyoftheother.Combiningvaluesfromthetwosystemsmayresultinnonconformancewiththespecification.

5.Manufacture

5.1Types302Class1,304,305,316,321,347,andGradesS20430andXM-28shallbecolddrawntoproducetherequiredmechanicalproperties.

5.2Type631,Type302Class2,andGradeXM-16shallbefurnishedinthecold-drawnconditionreadyforfabrication.FollowingfabricationType631andGradeXM-16shallbeageorprecipitationhardenedtoproducetheirmaximumstrengthproperties.ThetensilestrengthstobeobtainedfollowingtheprescribedheattreatmentareshowninTable2andTable3forhardenedwire.Type302Class2shallbestressrelievedfollowingfabricationandmeettherequirementsshowninTable4.Thenominalas-drawntensilestrengthsareprovidedasaguideforthespringmanufacturer.

S1.WrappingTest

S.1.1Awirespecimenshallbewrappedfivecompleteturnsaroundamandrelequaltothediameterofthewirewithoutanysurfacebreaksorcracksoccurringinthewire.Onespecimenshallbetakenfromeverytencoilsinthelot.

S2.SurfaceExamination

S2.1Awirespecimenshallbeetchedelectrolyticallyina75%phosphoricacidsolutionwithacurrentdensityof1A/in2.

forasufficienttimetoremoveupto1%ofthediameter.Afteretchingthesurfaceofthewirespecimenitshallbeexaminedundera10powermicroscopeforsplits,seams,pits,diemarks,scratches,orotherimperfectionstendingtoimpairthefatigueresistanceofsprings.Appropriatehighermagnificationshouldbeusedforsizesbelow0.125in.[3.17mm].Lubricatingcoatings,whichareinsolubleinacidetchsolution,shallberemovedbeforeetching.
