OfcoursethissmallopeningwasfollowedbytheachievementoftheShanghaiCommu-nique,andtheeventualestablishmentofformalrelationsbetweentheUnitedStatesandChi-nain1979.Andinthreedecades,justlookathowfarwehavecome.

In1979,tradebetweentheUnitedStatesandChinastoodatroughly$5billion—todayittopsover$400billioneachyear.

Thecommerceaffectsourpeople’slivesinsomany

ways.AmericaimportsfromChinamanyofthecomputerpartsweuse,theclotheswewear;andweexporttoChinamachinerythathelpspoweryourindustry.ThistradecouldcreateevenmorejobsonbothsidesofthePacific,whileallowingourpeopletoenjoyabetterqual-ityoflife.Andasdemandbecomesmorebalanced,itcanleadtoevenbroaderprosperity26.

In1979,thepoliticalcooperationbetweentheUnitedStatesandChinawasrootedlarge-lyin27oursharedrivalry28withtheSovietUnion29.Today,wehaveapositive,constructiveandcomprehensiverelationshipthatopensthedoortopartnershiponthekeyglobalissuesofourtime—economicrecoveryandthedevelopmentofcleanenergy;stoppingthespreadofnuclearweaponsandthescourge30ofclimatechange;thepromotionofpeaceandsecurityinAsiaandaroundtheglobe.Alloftheseissueswillbeontheagenda31tomorrowwhenImeetwithPresidentHu.

Andin1979,theconnectionsamongourpeoplewerelimited.Today,weseethecurios-ityofthoseping-pongplayersmanifested32inthetiesthatarebeingforgedacrossmanysec-tors.ThesecondhighestnumberofforeignstudentsintheUnitedStatescomesfromChina,andwe’veseena50percentincreaseinthestudyofChineseamongourownstudents.Therearenearly200“friendshipcities”drawingourcommunitiestogether.AmericanandChinesescientistscooperateonnewresearchanddiscovery.Andofcourse,YaoMingisjustonesig-nalofoursharedloveofbasketball—I’monlysorrythatIwon’tbeabletoseeaShanghaiSharks33gamewhileI’mvisiting.

Surely,wehaveknownsetbacks38andchallengesoverthelast30years.Ourrelationshiphasnotbeenwithoutdisagreementanddifficulty.Butthenotionthatwemustbeadversaries39isnotpredestined40—notwhenweconsiderthepast.Indeed,becauseofourcooperation,boththeUnitedStatesandChinaaremoreprosperous41andmoresecure.Wehaveseenwhatispossiblewhenwebuilduponourmutualinterests,andengageonthebasisofmutualrespect.

Andyetthesuccessofthatengagementdependsuponunderstanding—onsustaining42

anopendialogue,andlearningaboutoneanotherandfromoneanother.ForjustasthatAmericantabletennisplayerpointedout—wesharemuchincommonashumanbeings,butourcountriesaredifferentincertainways.
