Last week, 169 students at No.35 Middle School of Shenyang took their first no-teacher exam. After the teacher handed out the exam paper, he left the room and never came back. A student collected the papers when the exam ended.

“That test was not only a test of knowledge, but also a test of moral (道德). We wanted to show students how important honesty was.” said Mr. Cai, the school headmaster. The school says no cheating happened in the test. Next year, 80% of our exams are expected to be done without teachers. But students have different ideas.

“I was happy and excited during the exam because my teachers trusted me.” said Lang Yudan, a 13-year-old girl from Class 11.

“It’s a good idea for schools to trust students a lot without invigilators(监考人). But I think it is a little early. Some students might cheat if there are no invigilators. And the students will not be

able to ask for help when needed.” said Hua Sha.

“I don’t like having invigilators in exams. When they walk around the classroom, they make me nervous. I would get higher marks without them in the room because I would feel more relaxed.” Liu Qingxi said.

“I think it’s very important to have invigilators in exams. Many students want to check their answers with each other after they have finished papers. And they can also keep the classroom in order when something unusual happens. They may make me nervous, but I still think we need them.” Shang guanyan said.

No invigilators may be a good idea. But before it, schools must tell students the importance of honesty and try to find ways to solve something unusual in exams. 36. The passage mainly talks about ______.

A.how to help to pass an exam successfully

B.how to make students honest in exams C.whether invigilators are needed in exams D.how to make students clever for exams

37. No.35 Middle School of Shenyang held a no-teacher exam to ______. A.let the students have a good rest B.teach the students in a better way

C.help the students pass the exam D.find if the students were honest

38. From what the students have said, we know _____. A.invigilators help them a lot in exams B.not all of them agree with the headmaster C.something unusual never happens in exams D.the new measure is warmly welcome by all

39. Hua Sha__________no-teacher exams.

A. partly agrees to B.totally agrees to C.doesn’t agree to D. has no opinion of 40. In the 6 th paragraph, the underlined word “they” refers to ______.

A.students B.headmasters C.teachers D.invigilators

Children are natural scientists, very interested in the world around them. Helping them enjoy science can be easy; there is no need for a lot of scientific terms(科学术语)or modern labs. You only have to share your children’s interests.

Firstly, listen to their questions. I once visited a classroom of seven-year-old children to talk about science as a job. The children asked me “textbook questions” about schooling, the money I got and whether I liked my job. When I finished answering, we sat facing each other silently. Finally I said, “Since we’ve finished your lists, do you have questions of your own about science?”

After a long wait, a boy put up his hand, “Have you ever seen a rabbit eat? When I try eating

grass like that, I get ill. Why?” This started a lot of questions that lasted nearly two hours.

Secondly, give them time to think. Studies over the past 30 years have shown that, after asking a question, many teachers usually wait only one second or less for an answer without enough time for a child to think it over. When teachers increase their “wait time” to three seconds or more, children can give better answers.

Thirdly, watch your language. When the child is having a discussion about science, don’t jump in with “That’s right” or “Very good”. These words work well when it comes to encouraging a child to help others. But in talking about science, these words make a child think that the discussion is over. Instead, keep things going by saying, “That’s interesting” or “I’ve never thought of it that way before”, or coming up with more questions or ideas.

Lastly, show instead of telling. Let children look at their hands through a microscope(显微镜), and they’ll understand why you want them to wash before dinner…

41. To help children enjoy science, the most important thing for teachers to do is______. A. let them see the world around B. let them study in modern labs C. tell them the terms on science D. share the children’s interests

42. In the last sentence of the second paragraph, the words “your lists” mean __________. A. your answers to the questions B. your own questions on science C. your questions from textbooks D. all the questions of your own

43. According to the passage, children can give better answers to the questions if teachers___. A. ask them to answer quickly B. wait for one or two seconds after a question C. tell them to watch their language D. wait at least three seconds after a question 44. The writer talks about all of the following ways EXCEPT that teachers should _________. A. encourage children to make up stories B. learn to make use of scientific language C. allow them enough time to think carefully D. encourage children to ask their questions

45. The writer of the passage is probably ____________.

A. a scientist B. a reporter C. a parent D. a doctor

Africa is home to nearly 700 lakes and rivers. It holds the largest amount of water among all continents on the earth. Because of the overuse of the lakes, natural climate changes and other factors, these lakes are disappearing quickly.

Millions of people in Africa depend on water sources like lakes and rivers for their daily water. In other words, they cannot live without these lakes and rivers. Recent studies by the United Nations show that this loss of water supply is putting a great pressure on the African population.

In the 1960s, Lake Chad was nearly 83,200 square feet. In about forty years, it has lost about 95% of its size and it is almost completely dried up. At one time, it was one of the largest lakes in the world, and was around 960,000 square feet around 6,000 years ago.

The sizes of lakes and rivers and the amount of water have something to do with seasons naturally. But pollution and agriculture also play an important part in the loss (流失) of water. Many pollutants (污染物质) are put into lakes and rivers so that many lakes and rivers are seriously polluted. And the water may be poisonous. If something isn’t done soon about the disappearing lakes and rivers, there will not be enough water for everyone. Then many people in Africa will face diseases and possible dehydration (脱水) . 46. What can we infer (推测) from the first paragraph?

A. There are about 700 lakes and rivers in Africa. B. Africa is larger than any other continent on earth. C. Climate change doesn’t influence water in Africa. D. In fact, Africa today has less water than before.

47. The figures (数字) in the third paragraph mainly show that _____. A. more and more lakes are drying up today B. Lake Chad was a very large lake in Africa C. how quickly water is being lost in Africa D. Lake Chad is about 4,160 square feet now

48. The loss of water in Africa is caused by the following EXCEPT______.

A. people’s drinking. B. climate changes. C. pollution. D. agriculture. 49. Which of the following is NOT the result of the loss of water in Africa? A. African people’s daily life is influenced. B. Agriculture in Africa develops quickly. C. The population in Africa will be smaller. D. Many African people will face diseases. 50. The purpose (目的) of the passage is ________.

A. to explain why lakes & rivers are disappearing in Africa. B. to show people the results of the loss of water in Africa. C. to call on people to solve the loss of water in Africa. D. to tell people to protect the lakes & rivers in Africa. D

Do you have bright ideas? ——Ideas or inventions that change society or, at least, make life easier for somebody? Perhaps we all do sometimes, but we don’t often make the idea a reality. Recently, in Britain, there was a competition called British Designers for Tomorrow. The competition encourages young people to carry out their bright ideas. There were two groups in the contest:Group One was for schoolchildren under 16; Group Two was for schoolchildren over 16, and there were eleven prize-winners altogether.

Neil Hunt, one of the prize-winners, was called “Sunshine Superman (超人)”. It’s important when people study the weather to be able to record sunshine accurately. We need to know how many hours of sunshine we have and how strong it is. Most sunshine recorders only record direct

sunlight. Neil’ s is more accurate (精确的) and this is very important for research into the way of using solar power.

You can do so much with animated cartoon. Look at Simon West’s idea for animated road signs. He uses pictures which appear to move as you go nearer to or farther from them. This isn’t a new idea. But it is new to use these pictures on road signs. “We found that people were more likely to see moving signs.” said Simon. So now, you can really see rocks falling, trains moving , horses running or a car falling over the edge of a cliff (悬崖). Quite a warning!

The ideas in the competition were so creative that we are surprised that British industry doesn’t ask more schoolchildren for suggestions. Perhaps this will be the start of “pupil power!” 51. The writer thinks that people seldom ______. A. have bright ideas B. turn their bright ideas into reality C. make their life easier D. think of inventing something

52. The organizers of the competition hoped the schoolchildren who took part in it would ___. A. become good designers for future Britain B. invent something for immediate use C. design something useful for the next day D. win as many prizes as they could 53. Neil Hunt’s design would finally lead to the improvement of the way of _______. A. recording direct sunshine B. recording the hours of sunshine C. using the energy of the sun D. knowing how strong sunlight is 54. What’s the use of Simon West’s animated road signs? A. To warn people to work carefully. B. To warn people of the danger ahead. C. To add to the outside beauty of a city. D. To help make people’s trip exciting. 55. The writer seems to be encouraging the British industry to ______. A. take better care of schoolchildren B. help schoolchildren in their studies C. stop asking schoolchildren for advice D. value schoolchildren’s creative power
