George Ahearn, who grew up in the farming town of Othello, Washington, co-founded EastWest Food Rescue after learning that COVID-19 was costing local farmers so much business that they were willing to destroy their crops.

His nonprofit has since moved three million pounds of produce from farms in eastern Washington to the western part of the state for distribution to hundreds of food banks and meal programs. “I know these people that I grew up with on one hand, and on the other hand I know there is a need here; I’m just going to connect the two dots,” said Ahearn, 45, who now lives in Bothell, Washington.

He started by calling local food banks who said they would be glad to take some of the produce that would otherwise go to waste. But when he called the farmers, they wanted to give him truck loads of potatoes and onions—more than Ahearn’s car could handle. He also had another problem; food banks needed the potatoes and onions to be cleaned and bagged before donation (捐赠). “What I didn’t realize was the logistical nightmare because I thought I could just show up with potatoes harvested straight from the ground and give them right to the food bank... I couldn’t believe it.”

So, Ahearn put out a call for help on Facebook. That’s how he connected with his two co-founders, Nancy Balin and Zsofia Pasztor. While Balin helped organize the convoy (运输) to drive across Washington to pick up the produce, Pasztor assembled volunteers to clean and bag the food, which was then distributed through connections at her another nonprofit Farmer Frog.

Since May, EastWest Food Rescue has grown the size of its operations and convoys. They have

reached three million pounds of donated food.

Aheam has a message for anyone who wants to make their community (社区) a better place, “I have seen minutes of effort move thousands, and thousands of pounds (of food). Just figure out what you are passionate about and what you could get involved in.” 16.How did Ahearn help his local community? A.By doing volunteer work. C.By purchasing their produce.

B.By making food donations. D.By moving produce to food banks.

17.What troubled Ahearn when carrying out his plan? A.He knew little about packaging. C.The food banks were too far away.

B.The produce was too much to take away. D.Much of the produce had gone bad.

18.What does Ahearn’s message in the last paragraph indicate? A.Many hands make light work. B.Actions speak louder than words.

C.The longest journey begins with the first step. D.Never was a good work done without great effort. 19.What can be the best title for the text? A.Food banks benefit from fresh produce B.Social media marketing for nonprofits C.Farmers’ businesses affected by Covid-19 D.Connecting the dots between farm and hunger

Scientists found grey squirrels quickly remembered how to solve a problem they had not seen for almost two years. The squirrels also quickly worked out how to use those skills in a redesigned version of the test.

‘‘They’re very good at getting food from bird feeders. People may try different types of bird feeders to keep the squirrels away, but this research shows grey squirrels can not only remember tricks for getting food but can apply those skills in new situations.” said Dr. Yee Chow of Exeter’s Centre for Research in Animal Behaviour.

In the study, five squirrels were given a task identical to one they had tried 22 months earlier, in which they had to press levers to get hazelnuts. In that first experience, the squirrels improved with

practice—taking an average of eight seconds on their first attempt and just two seconds by the final time they tried it.

Trying again for the first time in 22 months, they took an average of just three seconds to get a hazelnut.

‘‘Previous research at Exeter has shown that their memory for the locations of hidden nuts is excellent,’’ said co-author Professor Stephen Lea, of the University of Exeter. “But the new research demonstrates a very different form of memory. This is not just remembering where things have been left, it shows they can recall techniques which they have not used for a long time,’’ he said.

When presented with a version of the task that looked different but required the same technique to get hazelnuts, the squirrels showed a ‘‘neophobic” (fear of new things ) response — hesitating for more than 20 seconds on average before starting the task.

But once they started it took them just two seconds on average to get a hazelnut, showing that they were able to recall and apply the technique they learned in the previous form of the challenge. 20.How did the bird lovers probably feel about grey squirrels? A.Interested.

B.Annoyed.

C.Grateful.

D.Sympathetic.

21.What does the underlined word “identical” in paragraph 3 mean? A.Related.

B.Similar.

C.Opposite.

D.Attractive.

22.How long did it take squirrels to get a nut on average in familiar situations? A.2 seconds.

B.8 seconds.

C.20 seconds.

D.22 seconds.

23.What did the experiment 22 months later intend to discover? A.The best design of bird feeders. C.Squirrels’ unique way of hiding nuts.

B.The forms of squirrels’ memory. D.Squirrels’ memory for problem-solving. C

Researchers from the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART), have designed a portable optical sensor (光谱传感器), also called leaf-clip Raman sensor, which can monitor whether a plant is under stress. Precision agriculture is important for dealing with growing food insecurity, but it requires new technologies for rapid detection of plant stresses in advance.

SMART's new portable leaf-clip Raman sensor is useful in precision agriculture allowing early detection of nitrogen shortage in plants — a vital nutrient and the most important component of chemical fertilizers (化肥).

“Our findings showed that measurements using the portable leaf-clip Raman sensor under full-light growth conditions were consistent with measurements obtained with a desktop Raman optical instrument on leaf-sections under laboratory conditions,” says MIT Professor Rajeev Ram. “We found that early detection of nitrogen shortage in living plants is possible with the portable sensor.”

While the study mainly looked at nitrogen shortage in plants, the device can also be used to measure levels of other metabolites (代谢物), allowing it to detect other plant stress types such as heat and cold stress, salt stress, and light stress. The simplicity and speed of these leaf-clip Raman sensors make them practical for field use by farmers to ensure crop health.

“The sensor was tested on multiple vegetable varieties and supports the effort to produce nutritious, low-cost vegetables,” says Professor Nam-Hai Chua. “Extension of this work to a wider variety of crops may contribute globally to improved crop output and reduction of environmental pollution through reduced fertilizer use.”

The portable Raman system was designed in combination with local company Technospex Pte Ltd. The leaf-clip Raman sensor consists of a 3D printed clip that is built around a fiber-based Raman detection unit.

27.How is the new device used to detect a plant's nutrition stress? A.By measuring its nitrogen levels. B.By checking its exposure to light. C.By examining its field conditions.

D.By testing its resistance to extreme weather.

28.What advantage does the new device have over a desktop Raman optical instrument? A.It is simpler in theory. B.It is more fit to use in the lab. C.It is more accurate in detection results. D.It is more suitable for real-time detection.

29.What's Chua's attitude towards the role the new device plays in future?

A.Short-sighted. C.Optimistic.

30.What's the best title for the text? A.Is it possible to develop green agriculture? B.A portable optical sensor or a desktop one?

B.Cautious. D.Wait-and-see.

C.Precision agriculture: a must for good harvests D.Plant-assessing optical sensor: a big help to farmers

Look for Friendship in Cyberspace

In so many ways, cyberspace mirrors the real world. People ask for information, play games, and share hobby tips. Others buy and sell products. Still others look for friendship, or even love. 31. Identity and appearance mean very little in cyberspace. Rather, a person’s thoughts — or at least the thoughts they type — are what really count. So even the shyest person can become a chat-room star.

32. They’re looking for serious love relationships. Is cyberspace a good place to find love? That answer depends on whom you ask. Some of these relationships actually succeed. Others fail miserably. 33. Personal appearance doesn’t get in the way. But critics of online relationships argue that no one can truly know another person in cyberspace. 34. And they don’t have to worry about what their “nonverbal” communication is doing for their image. In a sense, they’re not really themselves.

35. But not knowing a person is a big problem in a love relationship. With so many unknowns, it’s easy to let one’s imagination fill in the blanks. This inevitably leads to disappointment when couples meet in person. How someone imagines an online friend is often quite different than the real person.

So, before looking for love in cyberspace, remember the advice of Internet pioneer Clifford Stoll: “Life in the real world is far richer than anything you’ll find on a computer screen.”

A.Supporters of online relationships claim that the Internet allows couples to get to know each other intellectually first.

B.Unlike the real world, however, your knowledge about a person is limited to words on a computer

screen.

C.All of this may be fine if the relationship stays in cyberspace. D.Police can help us to identify the one we want to know.

E.However, some Internet users want more than just someone to chat with. F.Gamers get a lot fun in cyberspace.

G.That is because the Internet gives users a lot of control over how others view them.

In December 2020, Flores Gonzalez had her 4-year-olds, Luna and Gianella, tie their lists to two balloons and release them into the sky above their home in Liberal, Kansas. It was their way of reaching Santa Claus.

Flores Gonzalez thought it was important to do something special for her daughters because of the hard year they had during the pandemic The schools were shut down and she was out of work for more than two months. Everyone seemed to be in low spirits. She wanted to cheer the family up and wanted the girls to feel that 2020 was another year spent with mom making beautiful memories. It was never with the purpose that someone would find the balloons. She thought the balloons would just float away and disappear somewhere in a tree nearby.

But one of the balloons did make it to Alvin Bamburg, who was deer hunting in Grand Cane, Louisiana, in late December when he spotted a balloon tangled (纠缠) in a tree. He told himself he needed to get the trash out of the woods. However, when he got it, he noticed a folded yellow piece of paper sealed with a red star and it was a Christmas list from a girl named Luna. She had asked Santa to bring her candy, a Spider Man ball, a Frozen doll and a dachshund (腊肠狗) puppy, which was her most desired present.

The holidays kept Alvin Bamburg and his wife busy. They had family reunions and organized several charity parties to help whoever needed help but they didn’t forget about the list. In early January, Bamburg shared his discovery with family and friends on Facebook. “I would love to know when it was launched. It looks like it travelled 600 miles,” he wrote. 注意:

1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;

People may try different types of bird feeders to keep the squirrels away, but this research shows grey squirrels can not only remember tricks for getting food but can apply those skills in new situations.(它们很擅长从喂鸟人员那里获取食物。

根据划线词后文“to one they had tried 22 months earlier, in which they had to press levers to get hazelnuts”可知,这次实验的场景设置没有改变实验的场景,同两年前的相似,故划线词意思是“相似的”。A. Related.有关的;B. Similar.相似的;C. Opposite.相反的;D. Attractive.

In that first experience, the squirrels improved with

practice—taking an average of eight seconds on their first attempt and just two seconds by the final time they tried it.(在第一次实验中,松鼠们通过练习得到了提高——第一次尝试平均用时8秒,而最后一次尝试仅用时2秒)”以及最后一段“But once they started it took them just two seconds on average to get a hazelnut, showing that they were able to recall and apply the technique they learned in the previous form of the challenge.(但一旦他们开始了,他们平均只需要两秒钟就能得到一个榛子,这表明他们能够回忆并应用他们在之前的挑战中学到的技巧)”可知,在熟悉的环境中,灰松鼠利用杠杆拿到坚果的时间是平均2秒。故选A。

根据第五段中“But the new research demonstrates a very different form of memory. This is not just remembering where things have been left, it shows they can recall techniques which they have not used for a long time(但新的研究显示了一种非常不同的记忆形式。 根据Captain Jack’s Airboat Tours部分中“Visit our website to get a ticket for FREE admission to our animal park, home to 100 alligators, tigers, snakes, and live alligator shows!(访问我们的网站获得一张免费进入我们的动物园的门票,有100只短吻鳄,老虎,蛇,和现场短吻鳄表演!)”

31.上文“In so many ways, cyberspace mirrors the real world. People ask for information, play games, and share hobby tips. Others buy and sell products. Still others look for friendship, or even love. 还有一些人寻求友谊,甚至爱情)”说明,有许多人活跃在网络世界里,设空处承上启下,下文“Identity and appearance mean very little in cyberspace. Rather, a person’s thoughts — or at least the thoughts they type — are what really count.

32.下文“They’re looking for serious love relationships. 33.下文“But critics of online relationships argue that no one can truly know another person in cyberspace. 故选A项。

34.上文“no one can truly know another person in cyberspace (没有人可以真正了解网络空间中的另一个人)”说明,在网络空间中,没有人可以真正了解的另一个人。下文“And they don’t have to worry about what their “nonverbal” communication is doing for their image. In a sense, they’re not really themselves.

But not knowing a person is a big problem in a love relationship. With so many unknowns, it’s easy to let one’s imagination fill in the blanks. This inevitably leads to

disappointment when couples meet in person. How someone imagines an online friend is often quite different than the real person.

36.was presented 37.who 38.to 39.assistance 40.Faced 41.Eventually 42.making 43.decades 44.led 45.a

故填was presented。

的贡献”用短语“contribution to sth”,句中缺介词to,故填to。

根据句意可知杰出人才“outstanding…talents”前的量词为“大量”a large number of,故填a。
