How long are you willing to wait for a webpage to open before you start to lose your patience? Half a minute? A few

seconds? Google engineers have discovered that even 400 milliseconds―as short as the blink of an eye―is too long for most Internet users.

A millisecond is one thousandth of a second. People hardly notice such a small time difference, but it does cause them to stop searching, reported The New York Times. “Without question, nobody likes to wait,” said Arvind Jain, a Google engineer. “Every millisecond matters.”

Nowadays, millions of smart-phones and computers are continually gathering and sending out information. With so many people downloading maps, sports videos, news and restaurant recommendations, you can get digital “traffic jams”. Meanwhile, users are expecting faster and faster service.

Google found that if one website is 250 milliseconds slower than another website, then people will visit it less often. This is why technology companies are now competing to be the fastest. Google said people do expect different things from different websites because they realize not all loading times are the same. For example, a person will be more patient waiting for a video to load than for a search result.

Even so, four out of five online users will click away if a video takes too long to load. This makes it difficult for video websites to choose between the quality of pictures and fast loading times.

Trying to get a higher speed has always been part of the history of the Internet. In the 1990s, when the World Wide Web first started to become popular, it was very crowded and slow; people called it the “World Wide Wait”. But engineers managed to fight the problem with new inventions. They laid a lot of fiber optic cables (光缆)for sending in high speed; they improved software so it would work more smoothly; they placed computer servers all around the world to be nearer to users; all this increased speed.

Nowadays we can enjoy much faster Internet. Famous search engines such as Google and Microsoft’s Bing usually find search results in less than a second.____________________________________________________ 1.The report from The New York Times suggests that A.A millisecond is one thousandth of a second.

B.400 milliseconds is not so long for most Internet users. C.A millisecond has nothing to do with the Internet speed. A.a b c B.b c d C.a c d D.a b d

3.Which of the following is true according to the passage? A.The quality of pictures comes first for video websites. 16、We’ve talked about snails (蜗牛) and their slow move. But much of the time snails don’t move at all. They’re in their shells ---sleeping .

Hot sun will dry out a snail’s body. So at the least sign of hot sun, a snail draws its body into its shell and closes the opening with a thin cover. Then it goes to sleep. A snail will die in a heavy rain. So whenever it rains, it goes inside its shell house and goes to sleep. A snail can sleep for as long as it needs to. It can take a short sleep. Or it can sleep for days at a time. And it spends all the winter months in its shell, asleep.

In spring the snail wakes up. Its body, about three inches long, comes out of from the shell. When hungry, the snail looks for food. It can’t see very well. Its eyes, at the ends of the top feelers are very weak. But its sense of smell is very strong. It helps the snail to the new greens. Then the snail’s little mouth goes to work.

A snail’s mouth is no longer than the point of a pin(针). Yet it has 256,000 teeth! The teeth are so small that you can’t see them. But they do their work.. If you put a snail in a hard paper box, it will eat its way out. And if a snail wears out its teeth, it will grow new ones.

In many – even most – space-themed films, whenever Earth faces a disaster, the solution is always fleeing the planet in spaceships. But the latest Chinese sci-fi movie, The Wandering Earth, offers a different and more ambitious idea. In the film, based on a short story by Chinese sci-fi writer Liu Cixin, Earth is in danger of being destroyed by the dying sun. In response, humans around the world work together to build a giant engine system that will push Earth away from the sun. Instead of abandoning Earth again – this time we’re taking it with us.

This “ambition” didn’t come from nowhere. For thousands of years, “homeland” has had a soft spot in the hearts and minds of Chinese people. One old idiom is luoyeguigen, which means returning to one’s homeland in old age, like fallen

leaves returning to the roots of their tree. Or look to an ancient verse: “The season called the White Dew begins tonight/Nowhere as in our native place is the moon so bright”. These both show the tight bond that Chinese people have had with their homeland. This special cultural background is probably what sets The Wandering Earth apart from Hollywood-style space films.

“What is Chinese sci-fi?” Guo Fan, the film’s director, said in an interview. “A vehicle that can really express our cultural and spiritual core can be called Chinese sci-fi. Otherwise, we’re just imitating others and telling the same American stories.”

And the makers of The Wandering Earth may have chosen the best time to tell its Chinese sci-fi story. The film was released on Feb 5, the first day of Chinese New Year. It was a time when many people had just made the hard journey back to their hometowns.

So to them, there is only one possible way to tell the story: Earth goes wherever humans go, because it’s our home. 1.What is the difference between The Wandering Earth and Hollywood-style space films? A.A different and more ambitious idea. C.The story with great imagination.

B.Its Chinese makers.

D.The specical cultural background.

2.What does the underlined word ‘abandoning’ mean in Chinese? A.抛弃

B.毁灭

C.依赖

D.索取

3.The makers of this film choose Feb 5 to put on it probably because ________. A.it was the Spring Festival and many people have time to watch it B.many old people want to return to their hometown then C.it can cause many people’s common feeling at this time D.Chinese people usually celebrate together on that day 4.What can we learn from the passage?

A.This film was based on a short story by Chinese sci-fi writer Guo Fan. B.This film tells us each of us should return to our hometown when we grow old.

C.We should protect the Earth because it is in danger of being destroyed by the dying sun. D.The director of this film thinks Chinese sci-fi should have our cultural and spiritual core.

19、One possible version: Dear friends,

Reading is very important in our daily life. But many students don’t have the reading habit. They don’t know what to read. Sometimes there is too much homework to do, so they don’t have time to read. What’s worse, they would rather spend their free time on computer games. I love reading and I’m in the school Reading Club. I got a lot of knowledge through reading. I have read over ten books since last September. I think reading helps open up a whole new world to us. I’m sure reading will be popular as time goes on! Come on, Everyone! Let’s start reading now!
