Japan has made 5,000 medals for the 2020 Summer Olympics. But different from common ones, these medals are made completely out of recycled electronics. One new goal of the Tokyo Olympics is to avoid using too many natural resources. So the organizers decided to make all the Olympic medals out of metal recycled from old

electronics.

You might not know that almost all electronics are made with small amounts of valuable metals like gold and silver. However, collecting enough of the metals to make 5,000 medals was a huge challenge, for the metal in each device is tiny. It would take about 20,000 cell phones to get just one kilogram of gold.

Beginning in April 2017,organizers placed collection boxes around the country and asked people to turn in their old electronic devices for the Olympic medals. Soon smartphones, cameras, and laptop computers began to appear in the boxes. The Japanese mobile phone company NIT Docomo collected around 6 million used cell phones. Then came the job of breaking those phones down into smaller pieces. This job is not that easy. Some metals inside aren’t safe for people to touch or breathe. Once they’re broken down, the metals have to be carefully moved apart.

On July 24, 2019, one year before the games are set to begin. People were first able to see what the recycled medals would look like.

You have probably dreamed about how you would change the world, only to find that it seems impossible. However, you may have the power to make the world better with baby steps. That’s the idea behind the BA Challenge.

The BA Challenge is a public service activity started by Alibaba and Sina Weibo. It asks people to do something good and then record the

changes before and after. Since its first appearance on Sina Weibo on Sept. 2nd, millions of people, including some famous stars, have taken part in it. For example, Chinese actor Huang Xiaoming sent mooncakes to old people who live alone. The young actor Xu Weizhou drew some trees in the desert, trying to show that working to protect the environment can give us hope.

Though these little things may be easily ignored (忽视) in our daily lives, they strike a chord(共鸣)with many people. “The challenge makes me believe in the miracle (奇迹)of good actions again,” wrote a commenter (评论家) on Sina Weibo.

“Though they are unimportant to one single person, they actually have a great impact on making the world better if we all do that.”

As the old Chinese saying goes, “Do not fail to do good even if it’s small;do not engage in evil even if it’s small.” Why don’t we all set smaller goals? Then we may change the world slowly but surely, as a river changes a mountain. ( )46. What lies behind the BA Challenge? A. Everyone is responsible for a better world. B. Saying is one thing and doing is another. C. Small things can make a difference to the world.

( )47. According to the passage, which of following is TURE? A. No matter what you do, you can record the changes. B. Alibaba and Sina Weibo set up the BA Challenge.

( )49. What can we infer from the passage? A. The activity makes all people hopeful of kindness. B. Many people value the good actions in their daily lives.

C. 穷者独善其身,

C. The more people join in the activity, the better the world will be. ( )50. What’s the passage mainly about?

Is there a way to quickly recall information just before taking an exam? Walking backwards might be a solution. Scientists from the University of Roehampton in the UK said this activity can help people improve their short-term memory.

Researchers asked 114 volunteers to watch a video. After watching the video, participants were split (分成) into three groups. One group was told to walk 10 meters forward. The second group walked 10 meters backward. The third group stood in one place. All three groups were then asked 20 questions about what they saw in the video.

The scientists found that the backward-walking group got two more answers correct on average(平均) than the other two groups.

This suggests that the link between the concepts (概念) of time and space is important in terms of how our minds form memories.“Time is really expressed via (通过) space,” Aleksandar Aksentijevic, who led the study, told the Daily Mail. When you walk backward, you see things from a different angle (角度) compared to walking forward. This difference helps people recall things that happened in the past.

And walking backward is not just good for our brains. It is also good for the rest of our body. Compared to walking forward, walking backward is more challenging. This can help us improve our fitness, according to New Scientist. Walking backward uses more energy in a short time and burns more calories.

In addition, walking backward is less stressful for our knees. It could be helpful for people who often have pain in their knees, according to researchers from the University of Oregon in the US.

Walking backward also keeps our spines (脊柱) strong, which can help to ease pain in the lower back. This might be why many old people like walking backward. ( ) 51.In the research, the second group__________. A. answered more questions correctly farther than the other groups

B. watched a video after walking C.

walked

( ) 52.Why can walking backward help people improve their short-term memory?

A. Because space is really expressed via time.

B. Because the different angle can help to recall things. C. Because our minds form memories by thinking back.

( ) 53.According to the passage, walking backward is good for our__________. A. hands

(D)

Mr. Luo is a teacher from Xi’an. He asked his students to hand in their homework through a QR code(二维码). “We spent an hour or two in class learning how to generate the codes, and in the end everything gets easier,” said Luo, “When students finish the homework, they keep it on WeChat. Then, each student makes his own QR code and gives it to me. So I can check their work everywhere using my computer or telephone.”

The QR codes can be sent to Mr. Luo by e-mail, QQ and WeChat. When Luo scans (扫描) his students’ QR codes, their

homework appears on his phone. He finds that their homework becomes more creative, with many pictures, music and even videos.

Luo’s students like the new way and think it is interesting. “We are living in the information age. Many students like to work with computers, which makes learning more fun.” said Tingting, a student of Luo’s.

“The paper is not easy to keep, but the code is easy to keep and share,” Luo said. “It is worth trying to use new technology in education. Education itself is a kind of creation. I don’t want my students to fall behind the times.”

However, some parents are worried. They are afraid that their children will spend too much time on computers and endless time communicating with teachers. But in fact, it’s unnecessary. Students still need to look up information in books and write it down when they do their homework. They only use the code when they hand in their work, which doesn’t take them too much time. Also for teachers, it allows them to check the students’ work at any time. And it’s also an easy way to share homework with other students. ( )56. One day, people will go to the moon—not just for a short stay, but to live and work for months or even years! This is the dream of many scientists.61._________One of them is what the house on the moon could be built of. We have lots of materials on the earth, but sending them to the moon is very expensive. It would be better if we could use materials that are already there. The surface of the moon is covered with dust. This material is everywhere, so it would be a good idea to turn it into the building material. However, there is a problem: we don’t have much moon dust here on the earth to test this idea.62._________Scientists think there may be a better way. Van Gogh was a famous painter. His work is sometimes described as Post Impressionism (后印象主义)”, which means that his style of painting is similar to the Impressionism paintings. The “Impressionism paintings” were made only a few years before he started. But Van Gogh added his own ideas that were different from them. His style was very personal. Though he was influenced by many kinds of artists, he made few lasting friendships with any of them and was almost always alone.

Van Gogh lived a hard life. Only one of his paintings was sold in his lifetime and he was never to financially(经济上地) support himself. His brother, then, often helped him, and the friends of his brother’s would help him as well. People who knew him would often describe him as a difficult person

and hardly happy. His paintings, however, use very lively colors and sometimes seem pleasant.

It was in his paintings that Van Gogh was able to express himself clearly. Most of his relationships in life fell apart quickly. There are many sad stories of Van Gogh attempting to get married. Every woman refused him. The famous painter, Gaugin, went to visit him after Van Gogh had written to him, asking for a visit. When Gaugin arrived, Van Gogh was very excited. Gaugin respected Van Gogh’s talent, but the friendship only lasted a few months. The friendship ended when Van Gogh fought him with a knife.

No one had ever painted the way Van Gogh did. The colors of his paintings were lively and the shapes were strange and dream-like. His life was just as strange as his art, and it ended very early. However, since his death, his paintings have become some of the most famous artworks in the world.

Ladies and gentleman,

Welcome to Boston University on such a beautiful Friday night.

My name is Yu Jingcai, and I am a graduate from the Master of Mathematical Finance program.

And they are watching me giving a speech in a language they don’t understand. Therefore, I am tremendously honored to share my perspective of 6 years at the Questrom School of Business.

75.The thing I always enjoyed doing was looking at the different country flags in the hall. Sometimes my friends and I even have silly competitions going on to see who knew more flags and it often amazed me how many different cultures and nationalities are represented in our community.

76.在过去的6年里,我很自豪见证了我们学校的成长。From School of Management to Questrom School of Business, and that our community is growing stronger and better each year, and this couldn’t have happened without the effort of everyone here to share, to inspire, and to embrace each other.

Let’s now think about the future. 77.没有人知道我们将会面临什么样的挑战。But we are sure that we will need a diverse(多样的) set of skills and knowledge. 78.And the most important of all is that we need an open mind to learn. That’s why we have been so lucky to be part of the Questrom community that cultivated such freedom of an open mind. So, congratulations, class of 2017! For when you walk outside that door today, you are already equipped with one of the most critical skills to succeed in the future, the ability to embrace diversity.

In recent years, some parents will make mountains out of molehills when students are asked to do some chores in schools. Some will complain about the teachers if their kids get hurt in schools, some may even challenge the schools’ teaching methods and management. 83.As a result, many primary schools, especially those in big cities, do not let students join in outdoor activities during breaks, fearing that they might get hurt. This is bad for the development of students’ best qualities.

What the primary school in Fuzhou is doing is worth praising. Doing chores can put a sense of responsibility into students’ minds and teach them the spirit of rules as well as teamwork. At the same time, it can make students’ in-school experiences more meaningful.
