Johnson’s troubles started while he was driving happily across the Mojave Desert. His car broke down and he tried to repair it. Then, to make matters worse, he tried to start the car and used up the battery. After Johnson had waited an hour in the hot sun, a Canadian driver, John Williams, stopped and tried to help him. When both men failed, Williams said he would telephone a workshop to ask it to send a truck to pull the car away and repair its fuel pump(燃油泵).
Johnson left the keys in his car and sat under a large tree. Soon he fell asleep. A repair truck arrived from San Pedro (the nearest town) and pulled his car away. Later on, Johnson woke up and thought that somebody had stolen his car. He started to walk back toward San Pedro but a police car stopped him to find out why he was walking in the desert.
Johnson looked like a man wanted in Los Angeles for robbery(抢劫), so the police detained(拘留)him at San Pedro for the night. The next day, Johnson telephoned his friends in Los Angeles. A smile(微笑)will tell people around you that you are a kind and friendly person. However, many people don’t smile because they think of their ugly teeth. For example, one of my classmates, Mike, doesn’t have very nice teeth, so that is why he doesn’t often open his mouth. He even says that he has lost confidence because of his teeth. So it is very important for us to look after our teeth. In fact, a lot of people have this problem. Some people inherit(遗传)teeth problems from their parents, while others’ teeth are bad because of bad habits, like heavy smoking, eating too much sugar or not brushing teeth often. If your teeth are ugly, you should see a dentist and ask for help. They can help improve your teeth and tell you how to take care of them.
Smiling can help you to feel more confident and make other people think of you as a more friendly person. If you want to keep healthy, you should not only smile but also laugh. An Indian doctor called Kataria said that young children should laugh about 300 times a day, while adults should laugh between 7 and 15 times a day. So please take this chance to smile and laugh now! 49. What makes Mike lose his confidence?

The word advertising is used to bring new products and services to the attention of people. Since ancient time, advertising has been a very good way to help with the buying and selling of products. In the Middle Ages, businessmen asked “town criers” to read public messages aloud to introduce their products. Later, in the fifteenth century, pages of advertisements (ads) could be printed(印刷)easily and were either hung in public places or put in books.
By the end of the seventeenth century, when newspapers were beginning to be read by more people, printed materials became an important way to introduce new products and services to people. The London Gazette was the first newspaper to leave a place for advertising. This was so successful that by the end of the century several companies started businesses of making newspaper ads for others.
