For many people today, reading is no longer relaxation. To keep up their work they must read letters, reports, trade publications, interoffice communications, not to mention newspapers and magazines: a never-ending flood of words. In 1 a job or advancing in one, the ability to read and comprehend quickly can mean the difference between success and failure. Yet the unfortunate fact is that most of us are 2 readers. Most of us develop poor reading 3 at an early age, and never get over them. The main deficiency 4 in the actual stuff of language itself—words. Taken individually, words have little meaning until they are strung together into phrases, sentences and paragraphs. 5 , however, the untrained reader does not read groups of words. He laboriously reads one word at a time, often regressing to 6 words or passages. Regression, the tendency to look back over 7 you have just read, is a common bad habit in reading. Another habit which 8 down the speed of reading is vocalization—sounding each word either orally or mentally as one reads.

To overcome these bad habits, some reading clinics use a device called an 9 , which moves a bar (or curtain) down the page at a predetermined speed. The bar is set at a slightly faster rate 10 the reader finds comfortable, in order to \"stretch\" him. The accelerator forces the reader to read fast, 11 word-by-word reading, regression and sub-vocalization practically impossible. At first comprehension is sacrificed for speed. But when you learn to read ideas and concepts, you will not only read faster, 12 your comprehension will improve. Many people have found their reading skill drastically improved after some training. 13 Charlie Au, a business manager, for instance, his reading rate was a reasonably good 172 words a minute 14 the training, now it is an excellent 1378 words a minute. 三、Part Ⅲ Reading Comprehension(总题数:0,分数:0.00) 四、Section A(总题数:0,分数:0.00) 五、Passage 1(总题数:1,分数:10.00)

It was a case of emergency. The four-year-old girl awoke and smelled smoke. She couldn\"t wake her mother, so she dialed \"zero\". An operator immediately called the fire department. Help was sent, and a tragedy avoided.

Days before this emergency, the mother had taught her child how to telephone for help. Children as young as two and one-half years old can be taught to use the phone in emergency situations. Here are some points.

Memorizing some facts is important. Teach your children their names, and the section of town where you live. Try to keep what they learn within their abilities. Simple information, learned well, is better than difficult information only partly learned.

Be sure your children know how to use the telephone. They should be taught to dial \"zero\" for the operator, at the very least. And they should be taught to dial \"911\" if it is used in your town.

Practise over a period of several days. Over-learning is necessary so the child can act automatically in case of emergency.

If you would like a booklet giving instructions on calling for help, write Telephone for Help, Box 99, Bowling Green Station, New York, NY 10004.(分数:10.00)

八、Passage 4(总题数:1,分数:10.00)

Newspapers are not nearly as popular today as they were in the past. There are not very many people who seriously read a newspaper every day. Most people read only the sports pages, the advice or gossip columns, the comics, and perhaps the classified advertisements. Most people don\"t take the time to read the real news. Newspaper editors say that their readers are lazy. They say they have to trick people into reading the news. They attempt to catch the reader\"s interest with pictures and exciting headlines. These techniques are used on the front page because it is the first thing you see when you pick up the paper. The first page attracts attention and encourages the reader to look through the rest of the paper. This is why editors always look for a good first page story and headlines that make you stop and look. If the headline is horrible enough or frightening enough or wild enough, perhaps you will go on to read the rest of the story. Just the same, there are a lot of people who do not even read the front page anymore. They may read the headlines, but that is all. Then they turn to the sports page, or comics, or advertisements. It seems that people do not want the news from a newspaper anymore. They say they get the news on the television now.

More people watch television news because it is easier and more interesting than reading a newspaper. What about you? Do you read news from a newspaper? Do you watch the news on television? Do you think it easier to get the news from television? Do you listen to the radio? Or do you even not care about news at all? Readers also use many other skills besides anticipating. 1 Rapid reading for example, is an important skill. It is especially important for students to learn to read quickly and with understanding. 2 There is another part of the skill of fast reading. It is choosing the right speed. 3 A person might want to read a newspaper fast. He or she is reading only for general imformation and can slow down anytime. However, the introduction to a textbook will need more attention and more careful reading. 4 Being able to change the reading speed is therefore, necessary.

5 Skimming, scanning(扫视), and surveying(检视) are all kinds of rapid reading. They have different purposes. Skimming and scanning are reading very fast while looking for a piece of imformation.
