The modern Olympics, which appeared in ancient Greece as many as 3,000 years ago, have become the world’s most important sporting competition. From the 8th century B. C. to the 4th century A. D., the the ancient Olympics were held every four years in Olympia in honor of the god Zeus. The first modern Olympics took place in1896 inAthens, and featured 280 participants from 13 nations, competing in 43 events. Since 1994, the Summer and Winter Olympic Games have been held separately every two years. The 2020 Summer Olympics, delayed one year because of the COVID-19, was held in Japan in 2021.

The ancient Olympics were held every four years between August 6 and September 19 during a festival honoring Zeus. The Games were named for their location (位置) at Olympia, a place near the western coast in southern Greece. Their influence was so great that ancient historians began to measure time by the Olympic Games held every four years.

After the Roman Empire conquered (征服) Greece in the mid-2nd century B.C., the Games continued, but their standards and quality dropped. For example from 67 A. D., the Emperor Nero entered an Olympic horse race, announcing himself the winner even after he fell off hishorse during the event. In 393 A. D., Emperor TheodosiusⅠended the ancient Olympic tradition.

Working hard at the development of physical education, the young man became inspired by the idea of creating a modern Olympic Games after visiting the ancient Olympic building. In November 1892, at a meeting of the Union des Sports Athlétiques in Paris, Coubertin suggested the idea of making the Olympics an international athletic competition held every four years. Two years later, he got the approval (批准) he needed to found the International Olympic Committee ( IOC ), which would become the governing body of the modern Olympic Games.

The grocerystore might not be your favorite place to visit when you're at home, but is it ever fun when you're in another country? Honestly speaking, they're one of those strange little destinations that I like to sniff out everywhere I go, much as other travelers head toward clothing stores, libraries, coffee shops or galleries.

The greatest beauty of the grocery store –– whether it's a supermarket or a tiny shop –– is that it gives you a glimpse into what local people buy to cook their own meals. This offers clues into their lifestyles and preferences, and into the agricultural and cooking practices of the country. I stare at the strange fruits and vegetables, the seafood, the cheese, the spices, the bread, and oh, the chocolate...always the chocolate!

Being the environmental nerd(呆子)I am, I like paying attention to packaging, which can reflect people's attitudes towards environmental protection. Italy, for example, has a habit of requiring customers to bag their fruits and vegetables in plastic for weighing, while Sri Lanka leaveseverything loose in bins. In Brazil, everything is prepackaged in a layer of plastic.

People in grocery stores tend to be friendlier. They smile, say hello, and sometimes ask questions, which can lead to great conversations. I had a further discussion with a teenaged cashier in Sri Lanka, over which bag of crunchy(松脆的)mix to buy. He insisted that the one labeled “spicy” would be too hot for me, but I told him I was

willing to risk it. He laughed and we ended up talking about my favorite Sri Lankan foods for ten minutes.

It's interesting then to come home and look at one's own local grocery store through new eyes. What would a visitor think? What stands out, and what do the food displays say about us as a culture? You might be surprised by what you realize.

8. According to the author, what is the key benefit of visiting foreign grocery stores? A. Learning to cook foreign dishes. B. Making friends with local people. C. Buying cheaper food and souvenirs. D. Knowing local people and the country.

9. What does the author show by mentioning some countries in paragraph 3? A. People's special lifestyles. B. People's shopping habits.

C. People's environmental awareness. D. People's packaging methods. 10. What can we infer from paragraph 4? A. Sri Lankans know a lot about food. B. Grocery stores are good social places. C. Grocery stores vary in different countries. D. Sri Lankans like to give strangers suggestions.

11. Which of the following shows the structure of text? (P: paragraph)

A. B.

C. D. D

I dropped out of college after my first year. Three years later, I returned to college after having been stuck in a dead-end job, working at a department store. I saw school as my way out. But I quickly found myself up against the same problems that had caused me to give up before. I was in over my head with college-level algebra (代数) and a heavy workload of reading and writing homework. In addition, I was still unsure of my career (职业) direction。

After about a week in community college, I was feeling the same upset and fear I’d felt a few years earlier. I was ready to drop out again. Then a smartly dressed woman with grey hair walked confidently to the front of my English composition class. “Look at you! You’re here because you want to change your lives for the better. And you’re going to make it!”

Mrs. Peters didn’t know me from any of the other 40 faces in her classroom, yet I felt she was speaking directly to me. She knew exactly what I was feeling and what many of my classmates were probably feeling as well, and she lessened our fears. I came out of that class making up my mind to succeed.

Having trouble keeping up with the workload? Break it down into small manageable pieces, and set up a schedule that works for you, she told us. Professors teaching too fast for you to take notes? Interrupt (打断) them with a question so you can catch up on your notes before they continue, she advised. If college algebra is too difficult, drop back to introductory college math, she suggested. As for English composition which can be hard and boring, she gave us interesting writing homework.

She never let us lose sight of our dreams. “Go for the best: you’re worth it” she said when we graduated. I left that community college with high grades and went on to do further studies. Mrs. Peters wouldn’t know that when she gave that talk, she made a huge difference in my life. 12. Why did the author go back to college?

A. He was out of a job. B. He was dissatisfied with his job.

C. He tried to start his own business. D. He hoped to learn more about algebra. 13. What troubled the author at college?

A. He did badly in recent exams. B. He was forced to leave school. C. He failed to manage his studies. D. He was beaten by bitter memories. 14. How did Mrs. Peters affect the author?

A. By showing favor to him. B. By talking with him directly.

C. By setting him extra homework. D. By givinghim inspiration and skills. 15. What advice did Mrs. Peters offer to her students on their careers?

A. Have fun. B. Start small. C. Dream big D. Think twice
