You useabject to emphasize that a situation or quality is extremely bad.

1. abject的基本意思有二，用于生活环境、事物的状态等时指“凄惨的，糟透的，可怜的，蹩脚的，绝望无助的”，即境况极为恶劣，有时仅指事物本身等级低或规模小；用于人或人的行为、动作时指“卑鄙的，可鄙的，下贱的，自卑的，怯懦的，奴性的，卑躬屈节的”，即地位卑下或奴颜卑膝。abject还可作“被抛弃的，遭拒绝的”解，是废语。
2. abject作“凄惨的，绝望的”解时在句中只用作定语；作“卑鄙的，下贱的”解时在句中多用作定语，偶尔（尤在美语中）也可用作表语。
3. abject不用于比较等级，但可用more、most修饰。
